Thanks, Lisa. Could I borrow a tissue?

I was just thinking that perhaps we should be thankful for the name Jackfowlieara. If we didn't have it we would have to say or write (Cattleya x Caularthron x Guarianthe x Laelia x Rhyncholaelia).

If I had to fit all that on a tag, all of my orchids would be NOID.

What happened to the idea of, say Cattleya mem. Jack Fowlie ? Then we know it's a memorial to someone and his real name is in there, not mangled up with "ara" hanging on the end.

(Cattleya x Caularthron x Guarianthe x Laelia x Rhyncholaelia). Only took me 3 clicks to copy/paste this. Naaahhh, it would still be Iwanagaara then. Mine still has a tag that says that and I just bought it from Rafael in February.

Anyway, backing away from this silliness a step or two, it appears to me that even the growers and people who show their orchids are quietly resisting name changes. The one orchid club meeting I went to with Patty, none of the orchids shown there had unfamiliar (aka "new") names and I remarked on that to Patty.

I would say a grower wants to communicate with potential buyers, so it would be prudent to speak THEIR language. Not every hobbyist has a nice Jim to look up the new names for them.

The problem with Mem. Jack Fowlie is that it would be a Grex name not a Genus name. You would have to put a genus in front of it, like Iwanagaara Mem. Jack Fowlie. Then the boffins would say no, it is now Jackfowlieara Mem. Jack Fowlie so what have we gained?

At the Tampa Orchid Club, the latest names are used, even on the bloom table. Three or four of us have OrchidWiz. The correct names are also used in our newsletter.

I can understand why! They don't want to lose customers because nobody knows what to inquire about. If you were looking for Vuyl. 'Carnivale Rio' for instance, would you buy Miltonidium 'Carnivale Rio' if there was no one there to ask?
