Growing around a pond at local park. Its new and Im not sure if its a large shrub or tree.

Yes, it is Cephalanthus occidentalis which likes growing near ponds or other boggy places. Wonderful plant.

I have kept my shrub/tree small (4' high 5' wide) by serious pruning and it still flowers nicely.
Started it by seed and had no idea it would get so big and planted a 6 inch sapling in the perennial border
..a balanced life is worth pursuit.
