Rose of Sharon (bush) in the Ask a Question forum

I bought a Rose of Sharon yesterday and want to plant it on the front of the house. The neighbors next door have one but it's so unruly. Would it be okay to try to shape it with blade? Height and width.

You can prune to keep it small. It's a continuing and time consuming project that may not yield the results you are looking for. As you haven't planted it yet, you may be better off trading it in for one that naturally grows as big or small as you want it to be.

Hi mk5455!

Some Rose of Sharon are more uprght, while others are bushy. If you have the same kind as your neighbor it will be bushy and unruly. If you have a different kind (flowers are different) then it could be a more upright one. Alot of upright ones need no pruning.

Wherever you put it, be prepared to weed because these bushes spread quite easily. When we had one I used to have to weed the area quite often and pull out little chutes.

generally, do your pruning in late summer or early spring. It adds buds onto new summer growth, so don't cut off new growth in summer or you won't see flowers.
Other than that, I think you can't hurt these and you'll get lots of practice, as they grow pretty vigorously in general.
