James (JWWC). I was curious, unless it's under patent Smiling , could you give some hints on how you got the pollen Steve (ahead) sent you, to 'take'. Im of course assuming he mailed it, and that might be a silly assumption.

Pam - That is a question that I am interested to know about, too! Please share the details with us, James. Smiling

Yup it was mailed. Steve, Peter, and I mailed pollen back and forth. My method was to harvest the pollen as I normally would. Once in the tube (I store it in microfuge tubes) I put the tube in the freezer. To mail it, I shipped it overnight with 1 or 2 ice packs in small styrofoam coolers (like 6in x6 in x6 in). The pollen that came to me was shipped the same way!

Everything that arrived was still cool, and based on the pods I've got, viable!

Thanks. Can you refreeze it, or do you use it right away.

Pam,

Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks?? LOL

For the first time ever, and I have been doing this since 1999, James has got me freezing pollen. I asked him to send me complete instructions, and he not only did that but sent me the entire kits, with tubes. This past week I put ESXRFK tips seedling pollen on a wonderful new intro from Shooter's called A WORLD AWAY, and the pod took, even though "tips" hasn't bloomed for a month.

I always used chilled pollen, but James' method is so easy, and it ships easily too. We sent a few back and forth to try, and the results have been very encouraging.

And,

I now have 20 tubes of pollen stored in the freezer for next year, of all my bestest stuff. I feel like a kid at Christmas...lol.

James do you dry your pollen before freezing it? I store mine in the little centrifuge tubes also. I dry mine overnight in the tubes with the lid open. I close it in the morning and put in the freezer.

Yes, Dot, I do. I normally take the anthers and leave them on a labeled piece of paper for up to 3 days before putting them in the tube. As long as they are dry and cool, I've noticed no problems.

Would a 0.2ML centrifuge tube be too samll or would 1.5ml be better?

I actually prefer a broad bottom 2.0 mL tube like the one on the left.

Larry Grace once came to our daylily club, he says he uses matchboxes. Ive been using those ever since, altho I dont freeze alot of pollen. I might just have to have some of those flat bottom tubes tho.
Leslie Mauck years ago, suggested I dry my pollen on paper plates. After a couple of days, the pollen is nice and dry, and the filament is adhered to the plate, so you can get just the pollen.
