Convenience foods are atrociously priced. Contain loads of stuff that are not good for you. Boughten bread.............so many preservatives in it. Make your own.....better yet, get a grain mill, grind your own grains and make the bread. That way you KNOW there isn't "junk" in it. Fresh veggies are more costly than canned, tho I do, on occasion, purchase canned green beans. Canned without salt, if I can find them. Lettuce is about $1.49 a head here..........lasts us for "maybe" 3 meals.

You are almost always (notice I said "almost") better making everything yourself.

I don't keep bread in the house anymore (unless I make it myself), I hardly ever bake unless we're going somewhere and I can take it and leave any leftovers. Satisfies my urge to bake, we can have a taste or 2, and the rest is gone.

Boxed breakfast food, for the most part, is nasty, unless you get something like corn flakes, shredded wheat, etc. Eat it WITHOUT sugar. Fruit juices are pretty sugar-laden too.........once again, read the labels.

I use coconut oil most of the time, extra virgin olive oil once in awhile.

Cheese is our downfall..........but not that highly processed crap. I get mine at a cheese store that gets their cheeses from local factories.

Ya gotta read labels, use portion control, and eat REAL food.

Someone once told me regarding foods..........."white is the enemy"..........flour, sugar, etc.

Since we have eliminated most of that which is not healthy, the Spousal Unit and I feel much better, and are not sick.

Oh, and drink LOTS of water every day...........they say 1 ounce per pound of your body weight is ideal.......... Green Grin! It flushes the toxins and crap out of your body and keeps your skin hydrated.

My favorite bread is cracked wheat sour dough bread. No salt. No sugar. No preservatives. It's a heavy bread, so I only make open faced sandwiches with it, but I love the taste of it and it does satisfy my desire for bread and I don't have to make it from scratch ... Smiling

I have never liked sourdough ..and I so wish I did because all the nice restaurants around here put it on the table...ugh. I would even tolerate rosemary.....

I bought a french bread from the co-op bakery ...SHOULD NOT have been sourdough. Got it home...and there was that distinctive flavor. Went back to store next day to read the little description on the bread case...sure enough they said "we make this witha bit of sourdough...but it does not taste like sourdough....Ha!

Their homemade sliced white ..called "wonderful bread" ....got it home and sure enough....they decided to make two types of Wonderful ..one with the sourdough evil stuff!

OK, a short story off to the side a bit. The area I live in there are a lot of fields of green beans, sweet corn, peas, cabbage and other vegetables. Green Giant and other mega firms. Once there grew peas right next to my house on a 40 acre patch. Day came for harvest. Those big companies are after volume = profit so they tend to pick them later than you or I would but this particular field was set aside for better quality peas = they picked them when they should. Big machines show up. They move down the field picking the pea pods, shelling the peas, spitting the "waste" out the back, throwing the peas into a large bin. I walked out into the field with a white 5 gal. bucket and, of course, as I approached one of the machines it stopped. Not a word exchanged. Driver knew what I was after. Dipped my bucket in the back and handed it to me. I smiled. 5 gal of fresh peas. Gene

I always liked Ralston hot cereal. Probably don't make that any more either. I DISPISE Cream of Wheat.......my Mom made that quite a bit and I vowed that when I had a family I would NEVER feed them that. Never did, either.

I like the steel cut oats, but the old fashioned oats are the choice here.

I have made chocolate chip cookies with the whole wheat flour I grind myself and you cannot even tell the flour is different.

Yum, that sounds good. I like frozen (or fresh) peas, but deliver me from canned ones. Don't have peas much, as they are high in sugars than beans. Carrots are not that great either, if you are wanting to eat really clean, like we do most of the time.

I have made cauliflower rice and "fried" it in coconut oil. Not bad. Broccoli fixed that way.....meh!

I absolutely love peas. Of course if you buy canned and even frozen they add sugar to them. Honesty I can not understand why frozen peas need sugar added to them. The canned ones they are trying to make taste better but I never think frozen peas need sugar.

Another thing about taste is what we are used to. A friend of mine eats gluten free pastas which are made from rice. They don't taste bad to me just that they don't taste like what I am thinking it should taste like. Actually what I am used to it tasting like.

Another friend once brought me something she cooked and she said that was rice on the side. Well, didn't look or taste like the white rice I am used to. Asked her again what that delicious stuff was that I just knew wasn't rice!! Well she said it was brown rice.

OK if you're watching your A1C...I get tested every 3 months Grumbling Grumbling ...what fresh fruits are best to eat?? that is to say low in the sugar. I tried to google it the other day, but am still on dial-up so it was taking 40 for damn evers and I gave up. Also same question for veggies. I LOVE fresh corn on the cob (bi-color) in summer, but the doc said too much sugar. WAAAAAAHH A lot of the good stuff (to me) is a nono. Crud can't remember the last time I had a baked white potato or rice of any kind.

Any berries. Strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, etc. Limit the apples and pay attention to how other fruit affect you. Sometimes you can have a small amount of certain fruit and it won't mess up your blood sugar but it varies for each person. Watermelon and other melons are high in sugar so very small amounts of those.

As for veggies, I remember celery, lettuce-preferably leafy greens and not iceberg. Limit the carrots, all potatoes and the corn. You can do half a cob of corn sometimes but then you can't have anything else that has high sugar content that day.

Peanut butter you want to have on hand or honey because if your blood sugar drops you need an instant pick me up to raise it and those too are good for that.

Lima beans are high in sugar but other beans are ok. The main thing is you want to eat protein. So much protein balances out a certain amount of carbs and sugars.

It's a pain to get used to but you learn to adapt. My mom has been dealing with it for almost 2 years now and is still figuring things out. I'm constantly searching for new recipes to try that meet the needs, is filling and is still really good.

First trip was 6.0 a year and a half ago and now it's 6.2 but mainly because she quit eating salads for lunch for awhile.

Checking your sugar helps you pay attention to what affects you and what doesn't. She's on one pill and checks her sugar after every meal plus keeps a food journal to keep track of what she eats so if she has high sugar at one point she can narrow down the culprit.

I've been watching this site, www.sugarfreemom.com and I have tried some of her recipes. They are good!! Plus switch from sugar to Stevia and it won't affect your sugar as much. Even better do as my grandma does and grow it. I made a strawberry pie and frozen lemonade pie back in July using Stevia and they were both a hit! I used a half cup Stevia instead a cup of sugar. Not easy to lay off the sugar but we make it work with some whining thrown in. Hilarious!

My first A1C was 9.7, 3 months later (after changing what I eat) 6.5. Last test (8 months ago, yes I am due for another test) 6.0. I only eat one vegetable and no fruit. Jicama. A Mexican tuber. I cut it into quarters, peel it, slice it into 1/4" slices and store them in a bowl of water in the refrigerator. Crunchy. Takes a bit like apples, pears. I eat about 1.5 to 2 lbs. per day. My go to snack. Only sweet thing in my house. Lots of fiber and vitamins. Here's figures for 100g portions:

Apple Jicama

Kcal 52 38
Carb 13.8 8.8
Sugar 10.4 1.8
Fat .17 .09
Protein .26 .72
Vit C 4.6 20.2

Some impressive numbers.

Give it a try. OK, its not real exciting but it has replaced all kinds of other things for me. Gene

Fruits are important. Just find the carb cost and factor that into your daily carb allowance Don't cross any fruits off ..choose small sizes of the fruit you like

Cantelope gives you big bang for the sugar cost ( like a 1/3 of the melon )

Fiber is important because diabetics have heart disease risk and it helps round up cholesterol

if you invest in an Atkins diet book..it will have PAGES of fruits and veggies and their glycemic index.. You can stick to foods on the low glycemic index. You can find this info on the net too. Print it and take to the store.

When this first came up for me the dr. at the clinic wanted me to count carbs....so I did sorta, but found I wasn't enjoying anything so I stopped...did cut out the "white stuff". She also said to switch to ultra beer....finally used to it, but it is the time of year for Oktoberfest and I will enjoy...just not as many :whistling:
Gene....was it you who said no more beer, but you do drink? So what do you drink now?
Guess next trip to town, I'll go by Books A Million and see what I can find. Oh and please tell me mushrooms are OK.....LOVE my shrooms
