Today is Labor Day in the United States and Labour Day in Canada.

In the absence of any roses specifically honoring trade unions and the labor movement, some of our forum members with more imagination than I could muster came up with some great suggestions for the Rose of the Day.

Fellowship (aka Livin' Easy)

Rise 'n' Shine

Easy Does It

And then there's Jimmy Hoffa. While no one ever named a rose after the disgraced labor leader, when he was the president of the Teamsters Union, he was more likely to be called a "rabble rouser" than to be referred to by his name.

So here's Rabble Rouser (aka Celebration 2000), our fourth Rose of the Day

Palatine is still updating its site. I'm going to start a new Palatine thread because I'm sure we'll have much to say about this season's offerings. The new ones they've added so far include Earth Angel and Quick Silver, so I'm pumped. Big Grin

I laughed when you, Sharlene, said Sebastopol was so big but I guess compared to your little town, it is big. The population is approx. 7600. For me I am finally living in a little country town. We moved up here just over 5 years ago from San Jose with a population of almost 1 million.

We are a bit outside of the town limit. Here's an aerial screen shot with my house in the center, you can see all the pathways. We back up to the neighborhood green belt so it feels like an extension to our yard. There are a row of redwood trees outlining the green belt.

Sue ... That is so cool to see. When I saw the Google aerial screen shot of my house I was awed by how small my gardening area was on the side of the mountain.

Thank you for sharing.
I'd rather weed than dust ... the weeds stay gone longer.

Google finally took a summer photo of our area, but it really doesn't show all the flower beds.
Thumb of 2016-09-06/CindiKS/ea6184

I have tb iris beds all along the larger creek, and a water lily and lotus pond in the lower left corner. Very faintly, you can see the chevron shaped daylily and David Austin beds in the upper right corner. The circle on the center of the open area is a flagpole with a big rose garden. The area in top center is roses, lilium, hydrangae and hostas. And huge apple trees! The blobs on the lower right are the mulch mountains.

@CindiKS I agree Wow and Wow again Cindi - that is a dream!!! But I am sure lots and lots of work! Do you have help??

@Calif_Sue Suzanne, 7600! Last count here was 645 in our village! But then everything is small scale here - Switzerland is small.
Your 1/2 acre looks lovely - can even see you satellite dish gazebo Smiling

No wildlife here to contend with, if you don't count the hedgehogs Hilarious! Actually, I have seen a fox once or twice but the deer stay in the forest.

Wildlife here aren't a huge issue because many of the homes around here have apple and pear trees (as do we) and there is plenty of foraging material for the deer. A few years ago, we had a group of wild boar, but they are gone now. My dogs do a decent job of scaring off the rabbits and coyotes in the daytime.
Other than the dogs, I have NO help around here. I use a tractor to move mulch and piles of weeds, and have a really fast lawnmower, so mowing just takes me about 5 hours a week. What I really need is automated sprinklers, as I spend way too much time watering. I laid miles of dripline last year but it does not deliver enough water. Luckily, this year we've had plenty of rain. Problem is, we get 5 inches in an hour, and then none for the next 3 weeks. Saturday, we had a big earthquake, and now I have cracked brick on my garage wall.
I was in Oklahoma, about 50 miles from the epicenter, and didn't feel much. My daughter in Kansas City, 350 miles north of me, said she was shaken from her bed! Her apartment is on the 2nd story of an old brick building and I was on a boat in OK, so that may explain that.

I slept right through the earthquake. Rolling on the floor laughing Several coworkers felt it though and didn't know what it was for sure until they saw animals acting strangely and the news talking about it.

Hope the cracked brick is something that can be fixed easily!!

I need automated watering systems here too. I need a brainy water system guy to come over and get a system set up for almost nothing. Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing My gardens are all over the place and some plants I can't even get the hose to. I have to fill a 5 gallon bucket to water them. Luckily I won't have a problem with the roses being watered next year. Easy to water where they're going.

Brazil is celebrating Independence Day today, so the Rose of the Day is Brasilia.

It's quite similar to Love & Peace, Sharlene, but more of a yellow-red blend than a yellow-pink blend. I wish it bloomed as often as Love & Peace. Brasilia is stingy with blooms. My Brasilia is an own-root rose, however, and my Love & Peace is grafted, so that might be a more pertinent reason for the comparative sparsity of the Brasilia blooms.

I saw Love & Peace offered by a nursery online yesterday and thought about ordering it. I had it when it first came out and it was lovely. I must have left it at the last house, because it's not here!
There are a few roses I want that are offered by both Northland and Palatine and I can't decide which way to go. Northland sells own-root, potted roses, and I can get them in the ground in the next few weeks. With Palatine, I would be planting in November again. It worked out great last year because we had a mild winter and I was able to water them. Long term forecast here is much colder than normal. Over the years, I've had more success with fall planting on the bare root roses. That may explain why I lost so many of the Regan roses this year. That, and the fact that 3 of them never broke dormancy at all. I sent the labels to them after talking to them, but never heard back. Do they just issue a credit on the next order, or did I miss a check? Guess I need to call them.. Didn't really see any on their list this year that I wanted. My Edmunds, Brecks and Wayside roses all broke dormancy after spring delivery, even the ones I bought very late. Wonder what the issue was with the Regan roses?

You just never know. I didn't have any from Regan this year, but I hated the Rosemania plants this year. I bought a lot of them and none performed well. They looked good when they arrived, but canes started dying right away. Lady of Shalott eventually lost all of its canes, and when I dug it up I saw that the roots were disintegrating. The feeder roots were nothing but dust. All but Lady of Shalott are still aliive, but they're mostly one-cane wonders. It's ridiculous that the Rosemania plants, which were planted when the weather was still cool and rainy, failed to thrive while the sale roses from Wayside (a notoriously bad nursery), which were planted when summer was approaching and it was hot, look much better, and the ones I bought from Breck's (a nursery with an even worse reputation) for pennies on the dollar look the best of all.

I'm also viewing Northland as a fallback, Cindi. If Palatine sells out of Earth Angel and Quick Silver right away, I can order those two from Northland. Their half-price rose this week is Ebb Tide, by the way, in case anyone feels like placing a Northland order. Ebb Tide for $8.50 is a steal.

What climbing rose would you folks suggest for me to go with a new clematis? its a simple-flowered, pale lavender labelled as 'Success Lavender' (Tra27). I gave one to my daughter as a gift when we went to visit the house she's recently acquired.
They have a small yard, running around 3 sides of their house, with a bit of neglected garden they've been striving to clean up for starters. There's a spot for climbers, with a trellis on the wall facing East, right before you get to the front door...so she'd love a sweet smell, of course.
Any ideas or advice would be very welcome!

Ooh Mary, a pale lavender clematis would look lovely with the deep purple climber Ebb Tide! And as Zuzu said, it's on sale at Northland Rosarium!

Hi Mary, I wondered if a pale yellow wouldn't look OK, such as "Ghislaine de Feligonde". Damien Ducher carries it: http://www.roseraie-fabien-duc... I'm now partial towards OG roses, probably new hybrids could be as good. I'm hoping to get a few cuttings from a friend of G. de Feligonde, so there again I'm being partial. Just an idea.
