Thread OP

I bought a seed packet from ebay of 'calla lillies'. It came from China or somewhere but one of the plants looks to be nothing like the actual lillies. I was wondering if somebody could identify it for me.

It took off a lot quicker than the lillies. I have a sneaking suspicion that it may be some type of weed.

I have included pictures of both the lillies and the tall plant/weed that is growing.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Crof, Welcome! to NGA

I hate to say this but none of your seedlings are Calla Lilies. Sad

Hi crof, Welcome!
None of those seedlings pictured look like Zantedeschia Callas (Zantedeschia) to my eyes but I don't know what they might be.

Image #1 and #2 look like they could be Sweet Clover - a plant considered by some to be a weed and by others to be a good plant for honeybees.

What type of soil did you use? Sometimes weed seeds tag along in bagged soil.

Did you happen to take any photos of the seeds before they were planted??

Daisy is right, none of your plants are Calla Lilies.

We've been inundated lately with plant ID questions regarding plants grown from seeds shipped from China from websites like aliexpress and eBay sellers. There is definitely a seed selling scam happening in China.

I'm so sorry that you were sent the wrong seeds. Thumbs down

Welcome! to NGA, though!
I hope someone here will have some recommendations for a good source of Calla seeds for you. Smiling

May I add that you do have a little payback. It would be a service to others to put in a review of the seller on eBay. It's the only way other buyers will know not to buy from that seller. Please! ?

There are lots of Callas available from reputable sellers in the US. Plus you will get to buy rhizomes, not seeds so it will save you growing them for a year or more before you get blooms. Not many people grow them all the way from seeds when you can buy then in bloom at the big box stores.

I agree you should give the seller exactly the review they deserve. ( Grumbling Thumbs down Grumbling )

Don't know your location but it would be best to buy from reputable local retailers or legitimate mail order companies who have the proper permits to mail seeds/plants/bulbs to your address.

Thank you all for you help. I will try and grow them a little longer so that I can hopefully identify exactly what they are.

Don't hesitate to post additional photos on this page as the plants mature and change and of course if it blooms I know you are more likely to get an exact ID.
