Sandi - I know what you mean. I wandered around the front/side yards today & saw many many buds.. and we've had several frosts, including one hard frost. No rain though.. just that little bit of snow a week ago. And that was only because I watered for 4 hours the day previous. Tomorrow's gonna be gorgeous, as is Sunday.. will probably take some pictures in the morning. My Medallion has some massive buds on it.. big big big buds that are a gorgeous deep coral color. I sincerely hope they actually do open.

Been transplanting roses.. I've got like 30 roses on the west side of the house that don't get enough attention/water/sun, so I'm putting them in the back / front yards. So I'm sweating like a stuck pig digging new holes and two of the roses I've transplanted have been bloodthirsty, so now I'm bleeding all over the place too (Outta the blue really gouged my leg, but I'm wearing shorts, too.. Medallion has ALWAYS been bloodthirsty (has the biggest thorns on any of my roses) and really snagged my back. things we do for our babies!!!

From the Denver Post http://www.denverpost.com/news... (but they're still not saying how MUCH we're going to get here in town)

-
The National Weather Service in Denver issued the first winter storm watch of the season Sunday and signaled the first chance for measurable snow for the city this season.

A "potent upper-level storm system" is expected to roll across the Rockies from the west Tuesday and collide with a cold front, dropping 6 inches on the northern Front Range and as much as 16 inches on locations above 9,000 feet east of the Continental Divide by Wednesday.

In the city, rain Tuesday is expected to turn to snow Tuesday night, and it "may become heavy at times," according to the winter storm watch.

The arrival is just a little later than normal. Denver's average date for its first snowfall is Oct. 21. The city normally gets about 4 inches in October.

The Weather Service warned people to keep an eye on their trees during the early-season storm. Most still have leaves that could catch snow and snap branches under the weight.***

Roads could become snowpacked in the high country, as temperatures fall into the teens and single digits.

After highs around 80 today, the Front Range should top out at 54 degrees Tuesday with a low of 29 by midnight.

Wednesday, forecasters expect a high of 34 degrees with a 60 percent chance of more snow.

Temperatures are forecast to warm to 42 on Thursday, 49 on Friday and 55 Saturday and Sunday.

Last time we had a really heavy wet snow when the temps had been this nice (ran around in shorts & a tshirt all weekend) was like back in '05 and most of the metro was without power because of breaking branches from the snow packing on the trees. Most of the city still has trees that are fully leafed out. Even in my part of town (SE corner) the cottonwoods are barely turning yellow and still have tons & tons of leaves. My silver maple is still 100% fully leafed. Sad That's gonna make it for a not-so-pleasant day then.

Oh great. Sad
I've lost several apple tress in the past ot these kinds of snows. My maple, oak and ash trees have turned color, so they will probably just dump their leaves with the snow, but the apple trees are still somewhat green.

OTOH, I still have some blooms. Here's one I cut and brought inside on Sunday. It's Freisinger Morgenrote. I love this rose - for a rose with this kind of form, it has incredible vigor, is quite hardy, blooms a lot, is fragrant, and I love the colors that blend from deep pink through orange and yellow. It often does a good job of holding its center and has lovely reddish dark green shiny foliage. This one is on its own roots.

These next two I just took a little while ago.

Heritage has some blooms:

I'll be taking some last minute blooms & pix tonight probably. Just saw this come through the wire.. record high today. Go figure.

Denver Post - http://www.denverpost.com/brea...

A new record high has been established for this day in Denver.

At 2:27 p.m. the National Weather Service reported that Denver hit 80 degrees, breaking the previous record high for Oct. 24 of 79 set in 1999.

The record comes only days from a predicted cold front that is expected to drop temperatures by more than 60 degrees and drop 4-8 inches of snow on the metro area by noon on Wednesday.

My spouse and I ate lunch outside and were commenting on how gorgeous today was and how unbelievable it is that it will be that cold and miserable on Wednesday.

We had a high of 89 and are expecting the "cold" front on Thursday - down into the 70s! Also a possibility of RAIN! I do not envy you for your winters; I would never survive!

Yesterday I planted some roses I had been holding in pots waiting for the drought to end, but since they are now predicting it could last into 2020 or beyond, I decided to go ahead and put them in the ground and hope I can keep them sufficiently watered.

Wow, that's a grim long-term forecast. I didn't know forecasts of weather patterns extrended that far into the future. I don't know that I'll even last into 2020 and beyond.

If this drought persists I won't even care if I last to 2020. I'm not sure where the forecasters came up with the pattern that they envision; I just hope they're wrong!

Ppal - Considering the weather people are usually wrong from morning til noon til evening til night, I wouldn't take much stock in forecasting that long of a term. Seriously.

I certainly hope you're right.

A lot of farmers around here have sold all their cattle rather than try to keep them through the drought. The extension service recommended it. I still have mine and don't plan to sell. The weather people are wrong more often than right - and get paid anyway!
