I used to dig daylilies with a shovel much to the dismay of the poor daylily.
The only digging / dividing tool I use now is a garden fork. The tines are much easier on the plants as it doesn't break the roots like a shovel and brings up much less soil. I have this one from Agway

On my wooden handle tools, I use boiled linseed oil every fall and spring.
