Might be a terrestrial orchid.
Really doesn't look like iris to me,but I think definitely a flower...

There was no size reference in the photo. I was guessing the wood was maybe 2.5 - 3 inches which would make the roots way too big for Sisyrinchium. Anyway, whatever it is, if you are gonna toss it, please consider offering it to someone for postage. Thumbs up
