The lowest recorded winter temperature at Mariehamn is -26 degrees F. That would be equivalent to USDA Zone 4 in years where it got that low. On that basis the answer would usually be no for Hydrangea macrophylla.

Bit off track, but I have holidayed in Mariehamn. Lovely in summer.
Our friends, who live inland, don't have hydrangea but they do grow hellebores. Now on my mind is "Helan Gaer." Skael!
