The green parts of tomatoes are poisonous. I grow tomatoes. After i pick.
I wash my hands and arms. Twice !!
I never touch any part of my body before washing. If i do.that part of body will itch like 👺 for hours and get inflamed.
Lord knows ? If i were to rub my eye ?
When i wash the soap turns green. So i wash again for good measure !
Long sleaves and long golves is idea i had to. But after every picking or tieing. It would be necessary to wash shirt and gloves. And not let them touch me.
Squash and okra give me just about the same reaction. Eggplant doesn't bother me. So im guessing the reaction isn't a niteshade issue.
I wish you the best. 😎😎😎

I feel for you, SanDiego. It's awful to not know what's causing you to feel bad! Something that came to my mind is the possibility that one of your neighbors could be using some kind of pesticides or chemical service that might over-spray onto your property. This happened to me many years ago and it took me months to finally correlate my problem to the truck that came and sprayed chemicals on my neighbor's perfectly manicured yard.

As far as growing tomatoes goes, I like growing my own plants from seeds that are preferably from an organic source and non-gmo. I know gmo tomatoes are only supposed to be available commercially but who knows for sure? If I grow them myself, I at least know they weren't treated with chemicals.

Hopefully, you have the blood work done and find an answer to your health problems.

If you want to try growing your own tomatoes, send me a treemail. I'd be more than happy to send you some seeds. This year I grew a pretty productive paste tomato called Amish Paste and have saved some seeds. Smiling

That sounds like an allergic reaction which hers also resembles.

I am slightly allergic to corn and rose bushes among other things.
When I walk through a corn stand with bare arms I come out scratching, same if I lay down on grass with a bare back.
One of the few good thing about hot sweaty days and that washes away the irritant so it usually does not last long, other wise I wipe myself down with a damp cloth.

For roses it is not so bad except some times a day to two days later I will get a headache and find some part of my arms or hands aching.
If it is a larger thorn easy to remove , some times you find those when you pick some thing up and it feels like you stabbed yourself, but sometimes it is just a tiny pepper sized speck of thorn that lodged in the skin.
I pull or sqeeze it out and the headache and sore spot go away.

If I wipe my eyes with corn pollen on my hands I get annoying weepy eyes for about an hour.

RPR I think most people get itchy from corn and grass it could be an allergy or just itchy plants like okra and figs. I found out as a young kid rolling in grass may be fun but the repercussions are not so much Thumbs up

If it is an allergic reaction, at least you have narrowed down the foliage and can either avoid that plant or, as RickCorey suggested, see if other varieties of tomatoes cause the same reaction. You may need to get an allergy test done, and specifically include tomato foliage as one of the tests (you may also be sensitive to other things you are not aware of). I've occasionally had bouts of phyto-photo-dermatitis (rash caused by certain plants reacting to sunlight). My dermotologist was able to immediately diagnose the condition, but advised me it would be next to impossible to figure out precisely which plant was causing it. More likely to be in the umbelliferae family, which covers a wide range of both cultivated plants and weeds. I usually chase the shade when gardening, and have doubled down on that strategy both for that specific skin rash and also to avoid skin cancers which run in my family. Good luck and I guess stay away from your lovely tomato plants unless fully protected.

I just got back from the doc, be said that some of my white blood cell counts indicate that I might be allergic to something. Unfortunately as much as I love my tomatos, I'm gonna have a friend pull them out. Sad I've put so much love into them, and they might not even be the problem. However, my health has been horribly affected and at this point, I'm willing to try anything. Crying

I'm also going to have a mold test conducted in my home, hopefully the tomatoes are the culprit.

The bloodwork, although a month late, didn't indicate a poisoning. Hopefully I can get this figured out, I'm so sick of being sick. I'm ridden with anxiety to the extent my doc's now mentioning an anxiety disorder. Which is shocking considering I've been a healthy person my entire life.

I seriously hope this all goes away, my neighbor didn't make it over to pull my plants yet. Hopefully tomorrow this whole thing's over, it really does feel like I'm being poisoned.

I started getting panic attacks about 4 years ago out of the blue. I had never had them before and they scared the crap out of me. They put me on anxiety pills thinking I had an anxiety disorder also. Turns out I had a hiatal hernia that was effecting my breathing and causing acid reflux so they switched my meds. I changed my diet to almost a completely vegan diet, I still eat some meat but in very small portions and cut out a lot of spicy foods. I was able to not only stop the panic attacks, but was able to loose 30 lbs and no longer need any pills. I'm not a fan of any meds because the pharmaceutical companies are the ones writing the books for the doctors to go by and they bribe doctors with meals, trips, and gifts in efforts to support their products. There is hardly ever a time you'll go see a doctor and not walk out without a prescription. They push meds on us and our loved ones when most of the time there are other ways to cure or help the patient. It's not the DR's fault it starts in the school system that the pharmaceutical companies help support. You and everyone else should watch this video. I stumbled on it a few days ago and it's a huge wake up call https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Tomatoes have been out for a few days, I'm feeling a lot better. So odd, I can't imagine these home depot bought San marzano tomato plants giving me dementia/psychosis like symptoms?

I'm at a complete loss for explanation. However, after they had been pulled, I'm literally better. Confused

Anyone here in medicine that can give me some sort of explanation?

I'm glad you are feeling better! I love this thread, I'm learning so much reading it. I always have a massive stuffy nose/itchy eyes/face allergy response after being out in the garden. I've been attributing it to mold since it is damp, but it might be the actual tomato plants. It hadn't occurred to me that the plants could cause allergic reactions even though I can eat the food. I plan to grow corn next year and I already know I'm allergic to grass pollen so I bet the corn will be an issue. I also have ragweed allergies so sunflower seeds and bananas can sometimes set that off.

Maybe you have developed a sensitivity to the plants ?
There are people that are allergic to grass pollen but they eat grass sprouts.
