The past few years I've found a couple of these weedy shrub-like plants popping up in shady areas of the yard. Although I think I had it identified in the past I can't for the life of me remember what it is. I've searched and searched on the internet and haven't found a match. Upright growth, woody stems/branches with sharp thorns all along each stem. When the leaves are crushed they have a strong fragrance, not bad, not flowery ...

Josephine: Thank you so much! It had been identified for me in the past but for the life of me I couldn't remember the name. It is indeed a Zanthoxylum, but not Z. hirsutum, rather another variety Z. clava-herculis. Thanks again for your help!
