Kalanchoe. Possibly Mother of Thousands. IMO, the all time champ for reproduction in many forms. Gene

I have seen many people write that one of these has taken over their GH and they wished they had never gotten one to begin with. It puts out rooted babies on the edges of its leaves. It flowers and the seed are very fertile. It can be reproduced by stem cuttings, by leaf cuttings. IMO, not an attractive plant to begin with but because it grows like a weed, popular with some people. Myself, I would not have one on a bet. Gene

Gene is probably talking about me. I let one grow in my greenhouse that came with another plant. I heard they have gorgeous flowers so let it grow. When that first one hit about 3 feet, I took it out. I never saw it bloom but I am pulling up a lot of its children from everywhere - 6 or 7 feet from that original plant.

On the other hand, if you don't have to worry about it infiltrating every corner of your greenhouse, they have beautiful flowers. Smiling

I have a similar looking Kalanchoe, although it doesn't have the same purple markings under the leaves. I can already see its... reproductive power. Hilarious! Babies all in my cacti, in the yard, you name it. I don't mind though, I don't believe I have the best green thumb, so at least I know this is one plant that will escape being killed off by me. *Blush*

I can't express how sad I am about this. FWIW, I think it was the much ballyhoo'ed yet totally elusive-in-reality, K. daigremontiana, a catch-all name that most Kalanchoes are given in ID forums & on the W W W. If you look at that entry in the DB here, you will see a bunch of very diff plants. I collect Kalanchoes and can't find that one in stores or for trade.

LOL, Gene! You do have some good ideas. She's in UK, so sending plant material would be more hassle than benefit. I've never let myself buy plants on the internet, I seem to spend all of my budget very well in stores & on trades and don't have a dime to spare for shipping.

I'm so excited for you, Janet! You may not end up with the same affinity for these weird, rubbery plants that I have, but I think you deserve a chance to get to know it before deciding, for whatever my opinion is worth here, and if it doesn't create too much dischord in your house. I've traded babies of other species for many different plants. People who live where Kals are not hardy seem to love them. Others, not so much. Yes, the babies can fall from the mama to other potted plants, but they're not hard to remove if unwanted.

The Royal Horticultural Society has an entry for it, if that makes you feel more confident it's a "real plant."

It should be fine. It's not that easy to kill one. ;)

Here's what you should do: Give it away to someone you know, a neighbor, workmate, someone who did not make your friends list. You saved the plant, someone else can do the work of raising it, you can always get a baby later back from them later. Gene
