Ya'll make me feel so much better. How many times has the LR carpet been a dumping ground from me blowing or cleaning seeds? I finally decided to go outside to do this but it's worse there. For some odd reason, seeds tend to germinate no matter what time of year by my porch, lol.

I think we all have the same problem, too much hot air... Rolling on the floor laughing

I had my Daughter's bridal shower here in Sept. so I kept everything deadheaded until then. I'm hoping some of these seeds have a chance to mature before it's too late for collecting them.

I'll be adding seeds as they are collected, dried and packaged up into trade packets.

Lisa

PS: Janinilulu, it's nice to see you here! I think your going to like it.

I wish y'all had taken selfies of yourselves after your seed encounters

We have always lived with cats, so by now we know to take certain precautions when drying seed. Collected seed goes directly into paper bags or envelopes, which are stored in a larger grocery bag hidden from Ye Cat(s). After cleaning, the seeds are usually placed on a paper tray about 3"x3" made from newspaper, with sides 1/4-1/2" deep, and those are placed on cookie trays in kitchen cabinets that used to hold dishes. While the square of newspaper is still flat, the name of the seed is written on what will be a raised edge to the tiny tray - with the date. So, that's how I save seeds in a tiny hovel, ruled by cats. As Rick knows all too well, what might be cat-proof is not necessarily human-proof Whistling

DH and I have some friends and family who have an affinity for historic life styles. DH's cousin once fired a set of dishes in his kiln for our wedding gift that he said were like dishes from the Civil War era. A dinner plate has a raised edge, so that I can stand in the wind on our hill and have fluff blown off while seeds stay on the plate. I don't recommend doing this with a paper plate - it might blow away with the seeds.

Karen Holt, I too have dumped chaff from my porch in hopes of seeing seedlings in the spring, but haven't had any luck yet. I'll have to get more creative about where to dump chaff.

Luvs - may we never lose our passion for seeds and the universes they hold within.

Janinilulu & Dogs&Daylilies, hope you find something you like here.

That sounds like a great way to dry seeds or seed heads that are too wet to go into paper envelopes (if you have enough cupboard space).

When I try to dry them in a paper envelope, I either use multiple envelopes so no one of them has a DEEP layer of drying seeds, or shake them several times per day.

Soggy seed heads I press between coffee filters and cotton towels. Then I keep them separate from other seeds until they are very dry and I'm pretty sure they won't go moldy.

But I can't figure out any way to keep from losing things and then finding them years later. When totally dry and in "The Stash", I can find them.

But every place I think of to put things "where they won't get lost" ... they get lost there.

Wow, you guys go through a lot to dry your seeds. I simply collect them and lay them out on paper plates to dry. I have the name of the seed drying right on the plate. I put them neatly on the bed in my spare room with a small fan circulating the air. I swish them around every other day and pack them up after 2 weeks. I have 3 dogs but they don't get on the furniture, no cats for me!

I am so glad to hear that I'm not the only one experiencing seed cleaning/sorting/drying difficulties! If there's a stupid method of seed saving, I've done it. *Blush* Besides tripping over nothing to scatter seeds throughout the house, I've sneezed away a few handfuls, inhaled a few teensy ones, exhaled countless numbers across the debris I just sorted through, and created surprise harvest packs by dropping dried plates of seeds over numerous others. I once spent hours sorting the seeds away from pods only to learn weeks later that I'd unknowingly thrown away the seeds and stashed the trashy bits! @#$%^
I now look up pics for the seeds of new plants so I'll know what I'm looking to save. I tip my hat to you.

Lisa,
Last year I had done like you do. I had plates everywhere. This year, not so much. I have a 2 yr old that likes to get into Mamaw's seeds, lol. So I had to stay on top of it this year. Clean, dry and pack. My bedroom door now stays shut, lol. I have seed packets all over my floor (which I have to get up today since hubby is coming home and he'll walk all over them) which he just loves to come in and help me divide up what is going where. I'll walk back to his room and I'll be darned if I don't find a packet of seeds he decided he wanted for himself, lol.

I know whatcha mean!

>> I'd unknowingly thrown away the seeds

Once I had a big pile of "chaff" and a smaller pile of "seeds". So I tried germinating a small pinch of the "chaff" on a coffee filter, just see whether there might still be a few more seeds hidden in with the chaff.

I seemed to get 200% germination from the chaff.

Welcome @MrsBinWY to the swap. Welcome!
I picked tomatoes from 'Limbaugh's Legacy Potato Top' yesterday, a variety I got from her in last year's swap; one of my favorites in what turned out to be a very poor tomato growing season.

Hi Guys!
Yes it's me, 'jaynine' of GW (and various other seedy places). I had to use a different moniker to rejoin so chose one a friend used to call me. It's nice to see everyone!

Anyone have a clue? Another of my "chicken ate my plant label" fiascos.
One is Stachytarpheta jamaicensis, the other is supposed to be S. cayennensis. I've grown the former before, but not cayennensis, which is from purchased seeds. With both labels gone and the second one succumbing to the drought, I can't tell which is which. I'm beginning to wonder if they are the same. Both were in poor soil and did not grow more than 18-20 inches tall. The flowers on the first one seem oh so slightly larger and darker than the second photo.
