Thread OP

Hi, I was wondering if there was anyone in southern Utah who has grown avocado trees? Did you grow them in a green house or outside in the ground? I am really interested in growing an avocado tree outside. If you have successfully done so I'd love tips and things on types of trees do best in this climate and any other things you learned from your experience. Thanks!

Pretty sure you'd need a greenhouse, or some other way to protect it in winter. You're just a zone or two too cold for them to survive there.

I remember camping in Moab in March and having snow fall on us as we were biking. Very cold at night, too.

What are your wintertime highs and lows? I grew Mexicola Grande Improved in Zone 8 in California. The first 5 or 6 years of its life, I hung a 'trouble light' in the tree and wrapped the trunk with old fashioned Christmas Tree lights. The whole idea was to keep the tree from freezing to death before it got to a size that it could handle colder temps. Our lows were just below freezing but it got to 40 or 50 during the day. The ground never froze. It is the most cold hardy avocado I know of. The bonus is that the pits are small and the skin is edible. No peeling.
