Hi Peony People!
I am designing a new bed and would like to get my first peonies but have read that the foliage gets ratty looking towards fall. I don't want to feature them if they're going to look bad for a long time. Please suggest your favorites for pretty fall foliage (if there are any). Confused

Thanks!
Leslie

I think most Itoh's foliage stays looking nice for longer than any of my herbaceous peonies. My herbaceous always look pretty ratty by this time....you should check out the Southern Peony Blog, she lives in your state and I remember one of her posts was specifically about nice fall foliage--you'll be getting recommendations from a local in that instance! Here's that post from Oct 2015---http://www.southernpeony.com/2015/10/2015-beautiful-fall-peony-foliage-colors.html

Looking out in my garden right now, the one peony with the nicest foliage is Bartzella. Still nice and green. I will take a current pic and upload.

I, on other hand, is not big fan of Itoh foliage. They tend to develop mildew in the fall over here - may be because they are not full sun. Also Itoh fall colors IMHO are not that great. My pink NOID is outstanding with fall foliage though - burgundy without any browns and it is mostly shaded anyway. I will take some pics once it starts to change for the fall.

All of my other itohs foliage are either starting to brown or have mildew on them. All of my herbaceous peonies foliage are also showing mildew or browning or yellowing, basically not looking very nice at this time of year. The only one herbaceous peony that has had nice foliage in the past years has been Sandra Marie. I don't have a pic of its foliage this year. I had to move it earlier this month so I had to cut off its foliage.
