Established in 1998, and sponsored by The Missouri Botanical Garden, along with partnering organizations, Powell Gardens, Mizzou Botanic Garden, the University of Missouri Extension, Missouri Landscape & Nursery Association, and the Illinois Green Industry Association the Plants of Meritâ„¢ program serves to promote plants that are proven to be well adapted in the lower Midwest for the purpose of increasing plant diversity in the home and commercial landscape. A Plant of Merit has performed well in one or more locations in the lower Midwest region (USDA Zone 5 and 6). These plants were chosen by sponsors and regional horticultural experts with the goal of making available to the public a range of plants for diverse settings that are attractive, disease- and pest-tolerant, non-invasive, and with outstanding ornamental value.
If you live in zone 5 or 6 and want plants that are easy to grow and maintain, not known to be invasive in our area, resistant or tolerant to diseases and insects, has outstanding ornamental value, reasonably available to purchase check out
