Excellent point. Nix the hay!

I just read that instead of mulch, you can put flat stones at the base of your plant. But I don't know if they're talking about for freezes, or for keeping roots cool in summer. I have tons of rocks so I've done it, but I'm worried about my baby in tonight's freeze (not frost). Any advice?
You don't kick walls down, you pull the nails out and let them fall.

Have no fear. The rocks will work just fine.

Henryi has bloomed for me in December as the snow was flying. Though clematises give a sometimes fragile look, they are tough plants.
