Thread OP

These are prolific in the landscaping in front of the house we bought in March. Ready to rip them all out if they're weeds since I didn't see them bloom this year.

Hi, Welcome! Clifftcm!
You don't say what part of the country these plants are growing and I'm not sure what #1 is but if you just moved into the house in march, it could be that you just missed the blooms! I wouldn't take them out just yet. I agree that #2 foliage looks like Columbines (Aquilegia) I'd say that one should be a keeper for sure!

Welcome! Clifftcm - I agree your second plant looks like columbine. Can you check if there are bulbs under the grassy looking top one?

Nancy your plant looks like Acanthus but I can't see enough of the leaves to tell which one, here are a couple from the NGA database:

Clifftcm, your first plant looks like the foliage of a flower bulb plant, which one will be clear once it sends out flowers.

The two messages above relate to another thread and not this one which seems to have been split off when Nancy asked about her Acanthus in the thread. @Calif_Sue or any of the other mods, can we re-attach these two to their original thread, this one?

The second is absolutely Columbine. The first is a bulb, a very thirsty bulb or one going dormant. If it has little purple flowers in the shape of a lilac flower next spring, it's grape hyacinth. Id of foliage for bulbs is almost impossible. As Bonitin says, You will have to be surprised next spring when it flowers. If your winters are very cold, throw a nice pile of leaves over it when the soil freezes, to insure it winters over for you.
