Help! My Japanese NoID Thumb of 2016-09-24/Lestv/d9dea1

produced 4 little pods that split open today and they have tons of seeds! (Picture to come later.)

Questions:

1) Do you start JI seeds the same as bearded? If not, is there a good guide for growing JI seedlings?

2) Can JI cross with LA's or TB's? I never had bee pods before this year, and then had bee pods on all three! Since very few JI bloomed this year I wonder if the pollen is crossed?

All help appreciated. Smiling

I bet they are beautiful arrangements. JI's do so well in arrangements where they can be the focal point.

@Lestv

leslie are you planning to soak them in tea first? or hydrogen peroxide? then spraying w/camomille tea?

these articles might be food for thought before you embark on your journey?

http://www.epsomsaltcouncil.or...
The thread "Hydrogen Peroxide for Gardening" in Seeds forum

here's a quote i got from the nga site on preventing damping off.
"Jay,
I have found that Chamomile tea works the best to prevent damping off. Just steep two bags in a tea pot until it is room temp. Transfer to a spray bottle and spray your seedling. Or water seedlings with the tea. I've been doing this for years and never had damping off so I think it works. Once the seedling get a few sets of leaves they should be ok and not so vulnerable to damping off"

edited: to say i just found these articles last evening. found the dilution chart most helpful, plus the warnings about misuse of extra strength.

G'day Leslie, your plant of Japanese iris looks pretty snazzy! Congratulations on your first seeds, the first of many I hope.
I'm no expert, but have had quite a deal of success in raising JI's from seed to flowering in a short time. Some methods have been more successful than others. If you have followed my journey on the ''Japanese Iris'' thread, most of what follows is there.
This is what I do in my climate.
When the pods begin to split, collect them. Now, I think it is best to open them straight away and put seeds in a paper bag to dry for about a month. If you don't open the pod immediately, you may find a worm has devoured the contents by a later date.In the couple of trials that I have done, soaking the seed, after the initial 4 weeks, in (cold) black tea, changing it three times in as many days and then placing the drained seed into a plastic bag with some moist kitchen hand paper for 4 to 6 weeks, placing them in the fridge and then sowing gives me excellent results.I aim to have a good percentage germinate before winter. The seed trays must be open to the weather and the soil should not be allowed to dry out at any time.Sow all seed, even though some may look crappy.I have not had mould on any seed, but if you do, I would wash that seed in about 10% bleach, rinse and sow.You can skip the tea wash if you prefer and just soak and rinse in clean water as above.

Japanese iris are self fertile. They do cross with Iris pseudacorus, the most widely known clone being ''Kimboshi'', but there are others that are very beautiful which I have not seen.

The above approach may not be suitable for those growing in a very cold climate, so check out the methods used elsewhere.
Best of luck.

Thanks Paul! Do you think it would be okay to let the seeds dry for longer? If they dry for a month then are in the fridge a month that puts them in pots in the beginning of December, so the seeds would be outside at the start of winter. Do they need that cold?

Leslie, the easiest way to loose viability with Japanese iris is to store them dry.

My 10 month old dog Remy has just died in front of me.
I won't be posting for a while.
Last year, on Oct 2 my 8 year old shepherd Mischa died from snake bite.
