Hello
New member here looking for some advice on moving peonies.
I presently live in southeastern Massachusetts and I'm relocating to southern Maine in approximately 6 weeks. I have two peonies that I would like to dig up and take with me. The issue is that I won't be able to replant them until spring.
Do I leave them outside in pots for winter or would it be better to keep them in a garage until ready to plant?
Thanks in advance! Thank You!

Put them in pots. Can you bury the pots or will they be above ground? Main gets pretty cold so I would worry a bit about them being above ground with so little to protect them in a pot. If your garage is unheated that might be the better bet. Hopefully our more knowledgeable members will have more specific advice. Peonies are pretty tough. I kept one is a pot in our crawl space over winter. The crawl space was around 50-55F and it did just fine.

Thank you for your reply Oberon.
I will try to bury the pots. I'm moving about 2 hours from where I am now and hopefully they will survive the winter.

Good advice, Mary--I'm pretty sure they'll survive fine either way. Keep in mind though that peonies can be planted out anytime the soil isn't too frozen to work; you can even pre-dig holes and store the backfill where it won't freeze and plant well into winter.

It's always tough with a move out of season sequence. MaryStella gave about as good of advice as there is. Hope everything does well for you Amjbono. And welcome to Garden.org Smiling

Thanks Tracey. Kind of you to say. I am busy getting in peonies just ahead of snowfall. Frost every morning but the afternoons are pretty nice. Since I am digging up the bed and removing ground cover of land standing it is tough duty. Sieving out soil and disposing of plants. Want a new look and I can't contend with the deeply established roots mixed with grass that has invaded one section. It should look pretty nice with just peonies, lilies and iris. That way I can preen and mulch easily between each plant or subsection of iris or lilies.
