Hi everyone. I'm a Florida native and been gardening forever. But, I'm having a problem with my veggie garden. Years ago I planted in ground, raised beds and in containers. These past years I've been unable to do this. I have a pest situation that is unique to SoFla gardeners. Iguanas. I've missed my veggies and have vowed to get them back. I'm thinking vertical gardening. Has anyone had any luck with this form of gardening in any zone. I really miss my heirloom tomatoes. Thanks.

Oh my, we missed your post entirely in all the excitement over the hurricane, Diane.

I'm very glad we don't seem to have any iguanas here . . at least not yet, that I've heard. But from what I've seen in the Caribbean where they seem to be everywhere, they are good climbers so I don't think vertical gardening is going to necessarily help you unless you can put a pot on top of a steel pole, and then grease the pole so they can't climb it.

The lady I know in Grand Cayman grows her veggies in cages. She just made light, cheap cages out of PVC and chicken wire, and she pegs them into the ground with tent pegs so the iguanas can't get under them. They need to be enclosed all around and over top because the iguanas will climb the wire to get at the tomatoes and your other goodies.

Thanks Elaine. No problem. We were a bit worried down here as well. Luckily we only had wind and rain. I hope everyone up north is doing okay. As for the vertical garden, I'm thinking hanging pots for some veggies. Also I'm going to relocate the veggie garden to the front of my house. I'm on a canal and that's the main problem with the iguanas. They don't really venture into the front yard. Trying to come up with something that looks cool without screaming vegetable garden. They will have to do double time with the cacti and succulents, but it should make an interesting display.
