Hello Rebekah! I love that you and Sharlene are showing us seedlings.
I'm going to practice budding on my Dr. Hueys that didn't die after I chopped them to the ground. Temps should be under 90 tomorrow, hopefully.
Remember that children, marriages, and flower gardens reflect the kind of care they get.

Thanks everyone :D

CindiKS T budding sounds like a great project! If my multiflora roots stock makes it through the winter I'll be doing the same next year! I've watched 3 really good videos on it and it looks like fun! I Have a standard of Neil Diamond, who had a bit of dieback here and there. I've been thinking of grafting on a second color but it might be nice just to even him out with some of his own buds.

And yes Sunnyvalley, they do have Blue for You in them, along with the fuller magenta colored one. Actually the three are sibs. I love Blue for you! It doesn't get touched by black spot, at least not with any of the strains here. The dusty purple is, I think, the closest roses have come to blue so far, especially when they age. My Seedlings aren't an improvement on the original yet but I'm hoping next generation they pick up more petals. Of course it will have to wait till next season. Most of my hips were lost during our odd weather and I didn't store pollen like should have, and my roses didn't cooperate and bloom at the same time. Lucky for me I have a lot of selfs to play with, and I met another hybridizer who was quite happy to give me some of his castoffs. The first and and the yellowish one are his. I'm really excited about the button eyed pale yellow one. That pic is actually its first bloom and it has since changed to a peachy color and stayed that way, the little guy is a blooming machine and its blooms last a very very long time while remaining fresh and fragrant. I'm just hoping the little guy doesn't over do it and put all his energy into blooms and not develop enough roots, I keep snipping buds and another one appears Glare

Beautiful fall roses, everyone! Hurray!

I do not hybridise roses, but all your lovely pictures inspired me to venture out in my garden, in the rain, and take some shots of the few roses still braving the wet and cold.

Still barely alive, but at least it now has a few leaves to accompany the blooms:

Rosa 'Purple Tiger' (aka JACpurr, Impressionist)

This is an amazing grower and bloomer, unfortunately the flowers are heavy and tend to droop, especially in the rain, but it has a nice, clean rose scent:

Rosa 'Kosmos Fairy Tale' (aka KORpriggos, Brindisi)

Hopefully, this one will make it before the first frost:

The only rose in our garden that my DH got to pick Big Grin but a really good choice, it grows well and blooms like crazy, it has no smell, but the blooms last for months:

Another good grower:

Rosa 'Pascali' (aka LENip, Blanche Pasca)

One of the original roses from my grandfather's garden. It is older than I am and while its sister died from old age a couple of years ago, this one still hangs on and even puts out blooms all summer and well into fall. It smells like rose soap:

Rebekah, I lost quite a few hips this year as well but still have enough to play with. I look forward to comparing seedlings next season.

Welcome! Rebekah! Lovely photos and nice work in breeding! I tip my hat to you.

Beautiful blooms Lilli! Gotta love autumn flush, such a great farewell as the season ends.

I've just been tackling Leontine Gervaise, attaching very thorny, octopus tentacle-like canes to the arbor. I'm bleeding in several places.... Hilarious!

Sharlene, If I were to bud onto an established plant, where I don't want any of the root stock plant to grow, would it be best to bud several buds onto the base? I'm curious if a large, established root stock would have more absorption potential than a single bud could handle, leading to sucker growth. And if several buds grafted onto it would allow for that?

Or....is it best to start with a smaller seedling root stock, and let them develop together?

You've got me thinking about how many stem buds I throw away when doing wedding flowers, and curious how many of them would perform in my garden. I imagine many would not grow well here, but I'm sure some would surprise me.

Golden Fairy Tale is blooming nicely now, and I see what may be a sport opening- there is a perfect ivory bloom among the yellow. Some start out pale, almost ivory, but this bloom is opening ivory with more greenish undertones than yellow. There are 3 more buds on the stem starting to open. If they all show this trait I will try to root that stem. I LOVE this rose! The best petal count and substance of any yellow rose I've experienced. It would be great to have a white version!

Beautiful blooms, Rebekah! Hurray!

I absolutely agree with you about the end of season! It is too soon! Thumbs down

Looks like another day of rain here - too much to take the camera outside for shots of the roses I missed yesterday. However, I did go outside to muck about a bit, do a little deadheading and some weeding, remove dead leaves from the irises - in the rain... Just cannot stay inside, I think I might have become a gardening addict - haaaalp! Hilarious!

@Rebekah - I live in Switzerland but you confusion is understandable Big Grin As a born-and-bred South African, I also got them mixed up until I met my DH (absolute ions ago).

Just a hint: some of us have published our names, visible on the right of every post. Mine is Sharlene and I live in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland.

Shipping might be a little difficult to Switzerland but thanks for the offer. It would be fantastic to find somebody closer to home who dabbles in hybridizing so that we could exchange seeds or pollen. There don’t seem to be many people here interested making their own crosses. Sad

@gemini_sage
Neal, I only have very limited (first year) experience grafting onto older established root stock. I found it to be a little more difficult because the bark at the base was really thick and brittle and it split while I was inserting the bud eye. Typically, it only takes one bud eye to produce a new plant but I grafted two on opposite sides of the older root stock in the hope that at least one will take. I will only be able to report back next year on how or if the grafts were successful.

For me, it is definitely easier to graft onto younger root stock. There are a couple of vendors here who offer bare-root root stock for delivery in March. These are year-old ‘seedlings’ with a ‘neck’ diameter of 6-8mm which increases a little by the time it comes to grafting season in August. I only use one bud eye when I graft these.

The other option would be to only leave one strong cane from your established plant and graft a standard. Of course you will have to cut out / remove all the bud eyes along the cane and will probably have to battle with suckers for a while but if you are prepared to do that, I can almost guarantee success! If you do decide to graft a couple of florist roses, winter protection if advisable and most have performed very well here. So far mine have seemed to adjust.

Hope your sport on Golden Fairy Tale proves stable and that you are able to root some cuttings.

Oh my gosh yes, I agree I keep going outside in the rain, to work on gardening projects..... digging a bed, potting up roses, getting bulbs planted, weeding. Lol I made myself more work when I went with the master-gardener salvage team, we collected and divided plants for the spring sale. Theres always leftovers that need a home. I haven't been able to say "no" enough lol! Good thing my property was a blank canvas when I moved in last year.....it sure isn't now lol! I brought 50-60ish roses with me and have purchased and grown more since then, Not to mention the cuttings if they take. but at least those and the seedlings right now are inside.

Beautiful blooms Rebekah!

I've sent seeds to the UK and to the Netherlands without issue before, does Switzerland have strict rules about seeds?

Sharlene, thanks for that explanation, now its making more sense to me. I like your idea of budding as if I was going for a standard, then I would most likely air layer it right under the bud union. I doubt I'll dabble much with standards because of the need for winter protection, but now I realize how I can use an established plant to bud onto multiple times to get multiple plants. Thumbs up

Yes, beautiful blooms Rebekah - could you perhaps edit you post and add the names? Always great to know what you are looking Confused Big Grin

Neal, to tell you the truth, I am not too sure what the regulations for sending seeds and pollen to Switzerland are. I just assumed that there are probably special regulations for packages from outside of the EU.
It will be interesting to hear about you budding/air-layering experiments next season - really looking forward to it! (just have to get through winter now Glare )

@zuzu I have missed your 'Rose of the Day' posts lately Sad
Had a look to see which 'weird/funny/interesting' celebration days were on and saw that we missed, amongst others:
Miss American Rose Day on 20 October (it was also national Suspenders Day Hilarious! )
Apple Day on 21 October
Clean Up Earth Day is today (also national Nut Day - real nuts Big Grin )

I do so hope that you will continue posting the 'Rose of the Day' because not only does is show-case roses some of us have never come across, but also because it is a topic of conversation. With the dreary winter days ahead most of us should have more time for this forum because there won't be anything happening in the garden. Sad

Hi, Sharlene. As it happens, today is National Nut Day, so our Rose of the Day is Rosa roxburghii, a species rose commonly called the Chestnut Rose.

I comb through a sizable set of calendars in search of holidays, and not one of them mentioned Miss American Rose Day, which I could have worked with. The big problem is that there are many days I simply can't work with. Which rose would be reminiscent of suspenders, for instance? After National Liqueur Day on the 16th, I had to miss 6 days because they were National Dictionary Day, National Mulligan Day, Hagfish Day, and several others that were just impossible to match up with rose photos. Tomorrow, incidentally, is National Mole Day, iPod Day, and National TV Talk Show Host Day. What do I do with those? Hilarious!

Tomorrow is also Mother-in-Law Day Hurray! Many a Son-in-Law should observe that one Hilarious!

I clicked on www.checkiday.com - all the ones you mentioned were there plus a couple more.
The nice thing about this page is that there are links to explanations and background about the holiday.

For instance Suspenders Day: While the origins of this fashion-inspired holiday are unknown, the modern day suspenders were “Invented” in the 1820s by Albert Thurston. These once popular clothing accessories, sometimes referred to as braces, also served an important purpose.......

zuzu said: The big problem is that there are many days I simply can't work with.

You are right of course, there are some that are just outrageous and really impossible to connect to a named rose but for instance for Suspenders Day there is a rose on HMF called Alice 'Brace'girdle or Fancy Pants. Maybe a bit farfetched but still a good Hilarious!

Still, I am very glad that you haven't given up on posting the 'Rose of the Day'

Nutty Day to all - think I' make a Pecan nut pie in celebration Hilarious!
