I often met these plants on my trip in Brazil and wonder if they could be Tibouchina urvilleana?
These are photographed in the garden of a Brazilian friend, Paraty Brazil..
Thank you!

I'm questioning whether this is Tibouchina heteromala, it looks like some are selling this plant under that name. There appears to be both white and red centres so maybe they mature to red?

The Tibouchina heteromala I found on Wikispecies is different, without the red centre. When you enlarge the photo the title is Tibouchina grandiflora on all the photos there, but underneath in the description they all state Tibouchina heteromala..

This photo is in the Botanical Gardens of Lisbon,

I found one with similar flowers which is a possibility Tibouchina elegans, the leaves look very hairy, more research should be done to be sure..

http://131.230.176.4/cgi-bin/d...

A botanical drawing of Tibouchina heteromala which shows a white centre..

http://www.plantillustrations....

This is the project of Flora brasiliensis, as taken from the original obviously with changes..

http://translate.google.co.uk/...

http://florabrasiliensis.cria....

Both T. grandiflora and T. heteromala are listed as species in the original works, but T. grandiflora is not listed in the project so it would appear they are the same species as the organisations giving both names are obviously reliable ones.

There is a description of T. elegans in the original works, but it's in Spanish or Portuguese and I can't copy it to translate but it could be typed out word for word! The listing isn't alphabetical so you can use the 'find' if you can't find it.

The botanical drawing I'm finding of T. elegans doesn't seem to fit either...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T...

Flickr is often a good place to look but with caution as not everyone has correctly named plants.. with a possibility it can often be confirmed with further searching.

The same photo of Tibouchina heteromalla on wiki is on flickr, T. grandiflora is mentioned there as being a synonym..

Tibouchina heteromalla from Brisbane Botanic gardens

http://www.flickr.com/photos/t...

I have found some on flickr with flowers like yours Myriam, in some cases they have been named Tibouchina heteromalla or grandiflora, but in cases where the flowers match those of the examples from botanical gardens there has usually been a certain person confirming the name but I haven't seen this person confirm any others. Some others with flowers like yours haven't been given a species name.

These confirmed by the same person..

http://www.flickr.com/photos/g...

I have come across two examples of Tibouchina granulosa which look much like yours, but the majority of photos are very different so I think this is another case of mis-naming.

There's drawings of both on delta-intkey but neither look like yours!

There appears to be both white and red centres so maybe they mature to red?

That is also the case in my first picture with flowers, Janet, one of the flower's centre is completely white, another is on its way to become red centred (maybe)or maybe its the other way around..

The flowers on T.elegans look identical with red centres, maybe the shrub just started to bloom with very fresh flowers, I see a lot of buds.. the leaves on mine were very hairy too, very soft silky hairs that feel like velvet to the touch..
But I think T.elegans is rather small sized, mine was a tall shrub of around 1,70-2m and probably still growing taller..

The photo in this link you gave of Tibouchina granulosa (?)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/6...
also has one of its flowers with a white centre! just a pity there is no detailed picture of its leaves..

It is all very confusing.. Blinking

What makes you think T. elegans is a small plant Myriam? I could only find photos on the one site, I got the impression it was growing above a balcony. Tibouchinas do flower at a young age, you can buy them as very small plants with flowers.

The photo of the supposed T. granulosa I'm sure is wrongly named, most google images of granulosa resemble the drawing on delta-intkey.

I haven't looked for more species yet, but T. elegans looks a good candidate if that is correct, I think the photos on that site if given a species usually are.

I'm not sure now Janet, where I read the size of T.elegans, I tried to find it back in one of the links but couldn't, I think I was confused, sorry.. Rolling my eyes.
The exact match of the flowers and the densely silky haired leaves makes it indeed into a likely candidate..
