Are you prepared? Tell us what you're doing to prepare.

I went to the grocery store yesterday and I'm glad I did because when I went back today there wasn't a loaf of bread to be had nor water. I was very lucky today to find gas for the truck and some for the generator. I had to go to 3 gas stations before I found one with gas.

They are reversing the lanes today at 3pm on the Interstate to get all the coastal residents out - I'm 35 miles from the coast so we're not evacuating. My father is coming today to visit for 4 days and I'll have to go pick him up at the airport. That's going to be fun .. getting to the airport won't be a problem .. getting home from the airport is going to be a really BIG problem so I've been scouring google maps to find back ways from airport to home.

I'm really worried about my greenhouse since it isn't tied down I'm hoping that since it's essentially surrounded by a fence and houses that it should be ok .. I'll be moving plants into it as well as the garage and putting chairs and anything that can go flying up as well. My goal is to have everything done by tomorrow afternoon.

Annie, I do hope your greenhouse holds up. I think we may get lucky with this one. I am only about 20 miles from the ocean and am on a farm with NO stream or flood problem. Thank God.
We do get the wind, which one year it blew the panels out of the greenhouse and we went running to get them before they went into the street. We put up a wind breaker of ply wood now each year. We have that up and now the wind comes off the field and hits the breaker, which does help. We loose trees and parts of roofs but no damage like water can do. I hate those flash floods. Had to be rescued from a house many years ago due to flash flooding.
When I as young our farm had a big creek and an old covered bridge in front of the house. That same storm took the bridge too. I don't think you ever get used to storms but you do get good at preparing for the darn things.

I lived in Wrightsville Beach NC back in the 50s and Hurricane Hazel took the house away that I rented back then. My husband was being deployed and I was pregnant and moved back home just a year before that storm. They are comparing that one with this one. I am praying for all the people living in the path of this storm. We have learned just to prepare for the worst ride them out, but I have friends who have lost everything at one time or another. Good luck. Lovey dubby Stay safe on your trip home from the airport.

Thanks Jacquie & Rita .. Picked up Dad at the airport with no problems and was able to go back ways to get back home so it didn't take as long as I had anticipated.

I had forgotten that the greenhouse kit came with tie downs! 4 for each side! Thankfully after building it I put everything left over in a drawer in the garage and found them easily - So the greenhouse is definitely tied down now ... stopped at Lowes on the way to pick up dad and got their last 100 foot of rope that would fit through the eyes of the tie downs .. whether or not it will be enough remains to be seen. The panels in this greenhouse are in grooves at good half inch on each side so I'm hoping we won't get any blow outs.

Got the generator gassed up and it started on the 2nd pull .. my friend who is an electrician is coming over tomorrow morning to fix it so we can run the whole house on it sans the oven, A/C, water heater and hot tub. That will be extra nice since my landline is a cable phone.

I flew on a flight over the hurricane last week. Well, it was off to the side. I guess any pilot doesn't purposely fly over that stuff. Matthew hadn't even made Jamaica and it was big. The cloud formation from above was pretty spectacular. At that time they said the U.S. wasn't in danger. Who can predict these things, right? Everyone stay safe!! I hope it gets smaller and weaker as it continues northward.

The weather news I just watched changed the area of landfall more north to Jacksonville. So they don't yet really know.

Latest track looks like it might make a right turn around South Carolina and come back around and slam Florida again!

Maybe that won't happen and it will peter out by the time it loops around.

I hope it does peter out by the time it heads back too! Just got a text from some family in Orlando .. so far so good and they still have power.

After breakfast I'll be headed outside to finish moving plants .. we're suppose to start feeling it late this afternoon and all day Saturday.

Grandson in So. Pasadena said it wasn't even raining about 9:30 last night. So, I am sighing big time with relief. He is on the Gulf side since he is in law school. He was at Univ. of Miami.
I felt good until they started saying it could go possibly turn further West. Then I started to worry.
All is good now. I pray for those who are still in the path of this miserable storm.

It's just beginning here ... winds and some rain. It's all going down hill from here. The worst of it will be tonight .. I just got up from a long nap as I'm going to try to stay up late.

Still have power - As of 1:30am 5.3 inches of rain ... wind gusts into the upper 40's to low 50's. Starting to get scary and the worst has yet to come. In about 3 hours it looks like the edge of the eye will actually hit Charleston, 30 miles away from where I live.

My house is under the red dot in the picture and the hurricane is moving due north it should start making the turn in a couple of hours.

Still have power. As of 5:15am 7.4 inches of rain. Wind gusts in the upper 60's to low 70's. They eye wall will be hitting Charleston in about an hour. The winds are going to start really picking up now.

Tried to get some sleep but finally gave up. I kind of dread sunrise. I haven't been able to see the greenhouse since sunset. I haven't heard or felt any major crashes indicating a tree fell thankfully .. have heard large branches falling.
