Yes, we did catch a break. I think we'll be home tomorrow to see what needs work. Understand that damage is minimal but of course the garden got trashed. Just need to find out how badly. Obviously there will be work inside, but the roof is on. We may have to repair some roof tiles, but to be home will be wonderful! I'll call the police tomorrow am to make sure we have an all clear before we leave. The staff at the hotel have been great! Very supportive. Also the local residents have been supportive. Amazing! Anyway, maybe we can get home tomorrow. We will have to have a pass from the police to get home--they are trying to limit people in the area unless they belong there. Small town with a substantial police force! That's good in this situation. Maybe we can get home. I hope!

I hope you had zero damage inside. Yes, the garden is undoubtably trashed & that's sad but to be expected. Group hug Group hug

We've been in North Tampa. Will leave shortly--our bridge is open and we get to see what happened. I'm scared and dry mouthed, but relieved.

Arlene - I hope your home and garden are okay. And I hope your power has been restored.

I discovered that I had lost the majority of my hummingbird/butterfly small trees/shrubs and one of my rose arbors which were all in my backyard. Sad I've spent 2 days doing clean-up in the backyard and still have much more to do. After realizing that the blooming shrubs and small trees were lost, I immediately hung out my hummingbird feeders. Thank goodness because I had hummers show up almost immediately after putting the feeders up outside. The wind was still whipping, but I knew the little hummingbirds could not survive without nectar for very long. They are regular visitors to the feeders now, since most of the blooming plants had the flowers blown off or the entire plants were damaged all around my community. My husband and I today started replacing the arbor posts with metal poles. I had to cut the climbing roses Sad

And at the end of the day, I remember all the other birds and squirrels that I regularly feed and put up the bird feeders again. Geez .... I don't know why I didn't even think of them. I was so bummed out by all the backyard plant damage that I just started cleaning up immediately while the hurricane outer bands were still hitting my area.

I now have a HUGE pile of debris in my front yard waiting for the waste management to pickup. Some of the small trees and shrubs will grow back because the base was not destroyed, but the most favorite small tree that all the birds love is gone. Snapped in half during the storm. The backyard looks somewhat bare now with so much missing. Luckily, my 2 large oaks trees only lost small branches and lots of leaves. No other damage to them.

None of the daylilies were damaged from what I can tell. All the ones in pots were moved under the plumbago shrubs which offered protection. All the daylilies in the ground were fine. It appears all the low plants were fine. What a mess the backyard was though. Crying

There are so many other members from this forum that also live in Hurricane Matthew's path. I hope to hear from others to know if they and their families are ok and how their home/gardens held up. That was quite a nerve-wreaking experience!

Polymerous - I appreciate your kind words. Yes, I am lucky that the big Oaks withstood the Hurricane. They are very close to my house, so that could have been a real disaster if they had toppled over in the strong winds.

Something that kept popping into my head as I was doing backyard clean-up .... this is nature's way of changing and creating a new environment. I think that is what is going to happen. The loss of some of the plants has opened up more sunny areas in my backyard. So the landscaping will change in some of those areas. Smiling

Becky, that is great news about not losing those big trees, and the fact that your house is good is fantastic! Sorry about the loss of the smaller shrubs and trees, but you can replace those if they don't grow back. I'm just so thankful that you and everyone else is okay!

Have you checked out the Hurricane Matthew thread? Lots of people are checking in there.
