My kohleria is going to bloom again!

@gg5 Nice looking plant. At first glance I thought it was an episcia. Be interested in seeing a photo again when it blooms. My two episcias and the two African Violets are coming along nicely - both episcias developing new leaves. The AVs appear to be miniatures or semi-miniatures - one is just a baby while the other apparently quite a bit more mature. The rooted AV leaf has not shown any signs yet of new leaves. The leaf was already planted when I bought it and so I have no idea when to expect new growth. Guess I will stick with gesneriads for awhile - possibly into other types. Several years ago I grew a few large gloxinias - really beautiful, but now don't have room for such large plants. Also had a really nice goldfish plant (not sure if it was a gesneriad but think it might have been.) Gave the plant to an admiring friend - thinking to buy a new one for myself, but couldn't find one at the time. Any suggestions for a beginner who likes to try something new but doesn't have lights or much space?

Don sounds good! Yep space and light are the two issues! I have mine in an east facing window and that works fine. If they don't get enough light they probably won't flower. Are you experienced enough to do plant starts on your own? If so I'd be willing to send you some cuttings, but they wouldn't be rooted. The best way to root them would be in soil in a small pot inside an opened ziplock bag. Let me know what you think.

Greg, I would be very glad to take you up on your offer of some cuttings. Over the years I have successfully rooted African Violets and Gloxinia - some in water and mostly with leaves pinned down on soil. I have not rooted them in soil in plastic bags - but certainly willing to use this method as you recommend. Do you usually coat the bottom of stem with rootone before planting? Be glad to pay the postage and will send you my address by Tree-Mail. Thanks again for your generous offer. Am anxious to expand my very small (as yet) collection of gesneriads. Please let me know what you're sending when you get a moment.

Fortunately I live in a ranch house with large windows on each side of the house - with no close trees to interfere with sunlight and/or bright light coming through the windows. Am growing my African Violets in the east-facing windows. Other plants are housed in a little alcove off the kitchen which gets lots of light, but no direct sunshine. When I said I have little space - I meant for large plants. I have plenty of space for small to medium sized ones.

Incidentally, we had our first light frost of the year last night, but not enough to hurt many of the plants still in bloom. This frost is late for us in NW PA - are having a beautiful fall - leaves changing color - practically right before your eyes.

Don sounds lovely! I love how the trees here in Seattle change lately! I moved here 30 years ago and at that time we rarely had nice autumns - very wet so the trees just turned brown. But as things have been warming up here we seem to be getting nicer autumns, more similar to back east (although nothing as dramatic!)
