Hi Christie, quite a few of us here have Amaryllis, but I have not heard of anyone in this group having tried hybridization - speak up if you have!
Our adventure seems only go as far as keeping baby bulbs, haha!
I used to toss all the baby bulbs. I kept a few for the first time last year and grew them over the summer this year. They are in the picture below. I will keep them in the garage over the winter. Hope they don't come out of dormancy until next spring because I have no sunny place for them inside the house.
I recently read through many threads on the Amaryllis forum, and saw some fantastic flower pictures and enthusiastic gardeners there.
Do you mainly go after very rare and exotic varieties? It takes years to grow a flowering bulb from seed. I can understand that the result can be very rewarding, especially when the cross produces an interesting flower.
The mid Atlantic group is a very active group. It is full of friendly and knowledgeable people. Hope you hang out with us more often.
Edit to say ooooops! I saw your posts in the Mid Atlantic forum and thought I was posting from there. It must be confusing when I said nobody "here" had hybridized amaryllis. Haha!
