Almost lost this cacti NOID last year, had to cut off about 7 inches base got rotten due to the winter rains. And I guess I need to re-stabilize, add some more rocks now, it is leaning a bit..

Michael,
Yes they are Blue agaves, I had two in pots that were over 3 ft. tall and wide. Keeping in pots up north is something hard to do. It got so bothersome to bring them in for overwintering here in zone 6. I used to trim the leaf tips off with finger nail clippers. Only the very tiny tip. Almost couldn't notice it, but didn't cut into you.
Gordon,
I also have Stapelia gigantea which blooms only this color. The red color type is Stapelia Grandiflora. I plan to purchase one this spring. Soil ph will have nothing to do with the flower color.
Although they will hybridized freely with other kinds of their group. You could end up with all different types, but will not change flower color from season to season form the same plant.
Hetty,
When I approach a big cactus like you plan on. First get plenty of help. Then use welder's gloves and a denim jacket completely buttoned up. Next, Good Luck.

I've watched the "cactus movers" here in AZ move large, landscape cactus. They use old pieces of carpeting to wrap the cactus for it's protection and their own.

tarev,
Your "brain cactus" is known as the "Brain Cactus" Green Grin! , in fact. It's mammillaria elongata monstrosus.

You might think about adding it to the ATP Plant Database. (PLANTS tab at the top of you page.)

We are geographically part of Central Valley, but nearer to East Bay area in Northern Cali. We get the chilly winter weather, though no snow on the ground. And this year, even on the Sierras, there is no measurable snow, so really very dry. Chilly but sunny in winter and at times some days of thick tule fog (radiation fog), sizzling triple digit heat during summers.

Thank you Alan. I got that ceramic pot in a small nursery in Wenatchee, WA. They had some really different and interesting containers. Wish I would have had more money to spend. : )
