I was thrilled today to find at a plant sale two plants I had been lusting after: A Pachypodium lamerei f. cristata, and an Aloe ferox. They wiped out my plant budget for the rest of the month too Blinking

Awesome finds Hetty. I sure wouldn't want to stumble into that Aloe ferox, but it sure is interesting.

Wow! Those are really primordial looking plants. That aloe is fearsome. Good find. I've never seen anything like those.

I have this agave that I stuck in a coconut shell, it was really tiny at the time. Now, 2 years later it is stunted and probably starting to decline. I don't have room for it so I will probably take it to a friend's house out in the country and set it free. It's been a great little house plant though, it has a nice look sitting on top of a wall.

Ah, found the proper thread for the succulents Big Grin I took home some freebies from my aunt's garden and got this nice looking succulent. Just a bit of damage on some leaves, but otherwise plump and quite okay! Seems to look like a kalanchoe luciae but the leaves of this one seems more plump..or like a bear paw succulent but not the same edge marking and no fuzzy texture.

Closer look of the leaves

I've always killed succulents. But going to try again here. So in another forum here, I mentioned what I purchased.

I suspect my biggest downfall is over watering them in the winter. Even the ones I found at Home Repot yesterday, were looking like they had been overwatered a tad.

So, how do you tell, in particular in the winter, how often to water your succulents. Is once per month enough/too much? It's always a struggle for me to grow them, because either the heat seems to fry them, or the winter coolness and I over water them. Any little bits of info that you personally have on how you judge their needs will help.

What about fertilization. It appears I may have in the past been fertilizing them too much as well. One page I red said water them in April and in July, and that is it for the year.

Inquiring minds want to grow! Thumbs up Hilarious!

Alan, the big box stores are notorious for over-watering. It's usually good to take those plants out of the store's pot of soil and replant them in some fresh fast-draining cactus/succulent mix. You can check for root mealies at the same time.

Once a month is usually adequate watering for many of the succulents. Some need more. I don't have a "one size fits all" rule for watering. You know how plants are as individual as we are. Different succulents have different requirements. But generally speaking, less water in winter for succulents is a good rule to keep in mind. They usually rot quicker than they will thirst to death.

I agree
I spoke with an acquaintance of mine, who is a renowned Sansevieria expert, and his rule for any succulents is: when in doubt, DO NOT WATER. Very few succulents do any growing in the winter months.

Here is a picture of my succulent collection. One with the flash, one without. I think I should wait till it is brighter out and take a picture outside without the flash. I may do that later. Was just so excited to share them with everyone. As you can see they are little itty bitty, tinsy winsy, plants. I hope they survive and grow...lol! Nothing would make me happier than to be able to transplant them if they got to big for this little pot.

Agree with Hetty and Tee...when in doubt don't water...during winter, especially the ones I have outdoors, I hardly water, the only time of the year when we have the rains here. Although this winter, it seems the rains are nowhere at all in sight, so yesterday I watered them and maybe see again next month how it goes. The thing that I notice that really hurts them is being wet and cold for several days. That is how I almost killed my Sanseveira. Learned my lesson, so indoors go my Sanseveira.

So far they bounce back as soon as warmer weather comes back. I do notice though that during triple digit summertime, there are some that really seems to fry, luckily I get some tree canopy shade..so it protects them too..and there are some that thrives in that kind of heat, and blooms even more. Big Grin So I water them thoroughly once a week during summer Big Grin

Super, thanks for the input everyone. I'm going to try my darndest to keep them alive this time. I do have them inside for the winter, because I have a south facing window, that lets wonderful bright sunlight get in this time of the year. I am thinking they will like that. Then in the summer, I will move them outside in a bright shady spot.

Ah, these pictures turned out much better, with my Canon Powershot camera. The Cell Phone Camera should not be used for some things. *sigh* This is a picture of the one pot, and then the 2nd picture is an Anemone I have, and a Hybrid Echinopsis cactus I have called Southern Belle. Delightful ruffled Pink Blooms. Mine have not bloomed yet, but here is a link to the picture of the blooms:

http://www.huntington.org/Bota...

The picture of the newly potted succulents, includes:

1 - Echeveria Hybrid 'Neon Breakes'
1 - Crassula perforata 'String of Beads'
2 - Aeonium arborteum 'Black Rose'
1 - Pachyveria 'Powder Puff'

And below is a picture of my whole Cactus/Succulent Table in my south facing bedroom. All these plants will be moved outside when it warms up. They get lots of sunshine in this window.

The pot on the far left is Hybrid Echinopsis Southern Belle.

Lovely clearer photos Alan Hurray!

I have these succulents, I call them my escape artists Big Grin just snaking out every which way it goes..I was thinking of trimming them down, but since it is still cold, just letting them sneak anywhere, loving the little rosettes they form Big Grin

Having a bad winter though for one of my jade plants, hoping it will survive! It does get more sun so color changes in effect.
