Last summer, I planted some two year old asparagus root stock in my new garden. Little did I know, it needed much more room than I gave it. This fall I planned to dig it up and move it. I knew it would be big. I watched videos of moving asparagus. But this was a baby. Only a couple year old and really only one year in my garden.

This was huge. My son had the idea of washing the roots. That puddle is very deep. I had dug the new hole.

With all that we saved, we still broke a lot of roots. But it got moved.

That whole area it is in, down to near the end, is for asparagus now. I planted it so the new growth side is oriented towards the open dirt, but I don't know how fast it expands. I'm thinking I can fit maybe three or four more in there, but I'm not sure. I'm not planning to add more plants until spring (that's right, right? ) here's hoping it lives!

Robyn, I think you can fit 4 more plants in there (you're thinking just the one row, right?). And yes, plant them in the spring. I hope your transplanted one does okay... but if not, you'll have room for 5 plants .

Most of the way down that whole section. I want to move the rhubarb plant on the end. So I'm not sure what you meant by one row, but the area closer to the path is for asparagus too. (Ignore the number of asparagus 'icons' the app I was using to mark off the space did that. )

That's a really nice-looking garden plan! Are the squares each 1 foot wide? So you're thinking 2 rows of asparagus in a space 3 feet wide? (when I looked at the original photo I thought you were planning to just have the asparagus along the fence). I think your asparagus will grow fine that way, but it might be hard to navigate for picking... or it would be for me, anyway!

Let's call it an estimate, lol! I plugged in numbers to approximate it all before I actually moved the fence, so reality might be a bit different. It is between three and four feet, not just up against the fence. Yeah, it will need some additional pathing added. I was thinking about doing a sort of:

Pattern and maybe placing some stepping stones between a few.
