I wonder if anyone recognized this little but charming wildflower on stony soil on an open sunny spot end of January in Paraty, Brazil..
Thanks!

That definitely looks like a Lactuca, but I've never seen a red blooming wild lettuce.

Just as a side note, I found this list of Lactuca, but I don't see any mentioned for South America..

Thanks Dave and Lee Anne, I agree, the plant has something lettuce-like..I have been googling Lactua from Brazil, but so far no success, only found yellow ones, I guess the plant is too modest to give attention to, I like it though.. Rolling my eyes.

Hurray! very rare for me to come up with a correct ID. I just know that one because I grew it myself for a few years.

It did tend to flop a lot for me, Myriam. That's why I stopped growing it. Those skinny stems fall over easily so I'd say it did best in the middle of a bed where surrounding plants might help to support the flowers.

Interesting Janet and good photos on that site!
Emilia fosbergii is synonym to Emilia coccinae, so is the same plant!
Confusing..
As E.fosbergii is used as the official scientific name then Karen's pictures in the data base would have to move to E.fosbergii..and E. coccinae entered as synonym name...

I'm not sure Myriam!

Emilia coccinae is a synonym of Emilia javanica here

On USDA they are treated as separate species..

http://plants.usda.gov/java/pr...

http://plants.usda.gov/java/pr...

3 species in the US in Emilia..

http://plants.usda.gov/java/pr...

So Emilia fosbergii is a species in it's own right, the foliage on E. coccinea is different too.

http://www.hear.org/molokai/ka...

http://intermountainbiota.org/...

http://zojeczka.wordpress.com/...

You can fid the two species in Brazil in Asteraceae trib. Senecioneae.

Asteraceae Emilia fosbergii Nicolson
Asteraceae Emilia sonchifolia (L.) DC. ex Wight

Which means then that the Flora SBS site is not reliable as they state Emilia fosbergii as synonym to;

Emilia coccinea

Emilia sagittata

Emilia sonchifolia var. rosea

What a mess! Rolling my eyes. who to believe from these sites?

It is hard to say from the herbarium images in what the leaves are different, being all shrivelled up..

Strange when I looked earlier for Emilia in the Flora do Brasil it didn't show up anything, but now it shows up two species;
Emilia fosbergii and Emilia sonchifolia ??
