I have so much stuff left to plant, I'm wondering if it might not be better to sink pots of showy sedums (like Autumn Joy for instance) in the ground and try to transplant in the spring. Anyone?

You can still stick them in the ground. When do you have your first freeze?
The Hylotelephium type of sedum are very tough and should go through winter easily either way, sinking pots or planting.
I don't have beds prepared yet. No time. I can manage to sink pots though. We typically get average frost late Oct. It will get to 40 F tomorrow night but warming back up to lows in 50s...highs 60s & 70s.
