All About American Beautyberry

By wildflowers
November 25, 2016

I really look forward to fall when so many plants change into their colorful fall wardrobes; it's such a beautiful sight. The American Beautyberry is one such plant that makes quite a showing, boasting bright magenta berries that look much like bracelets of amethyst beads glistening in clusters along drooping branches.

I've seen them my whole life but had no idea they were edible. I love to make jelly. Does it turn out the same pretty purple color as the berries?

YVW.
BTW, here is another link I ran across looking for propagation info. mainly for the way to treat the seeds. That info. begins (& is very detailed) about the 3rd paragraph down on page 11. After that is propagation info. for cuttings.

Thanks for the link, Daniel. Thumbs up

I'll be viewing some more of his videos. Wondering if he has one on Farkleberries...

Green Deane is great, I love his videos. As far as Vaccinium Arboreum aka Farkleberries goes they are edible but are best used in preserves or jams because they tend to be very acidic. Green Deane is based out of FL and Farkleberries are a TX native so chances are he don't and won't have a vid on them but if you want to learn more about them you can google Vaccinium Arboreum and they also go by the name Sparkleberry if that helps.
Speaking of wild edibles of TX have you ever seen Diospyros Texana aka black persimmons in your area? I'd like to cross D.Texana with a large fruiting Diospyros Virginiana someday. I love the thought of interspecific hybrids and would love to see more work done with them.

I don't often get a chance to eat many Farkleberries, the birds love them and know exactly when they're ripe for picking. I will say that once ripe, they're quite sweet and tasty. Last winter my grandson ran across some shriveled up berries and asked if they were edible. I told him yes and we discovered they were sweet like raisins, I would even say delicious! Smiling

Yes, Diospyros Texana grows wild here. I still haven't found the fruits but I know they're around here somewhere because many times I've run across coon scat with seeds. I think we still have several small trees growing from those seeds. Hilarious! Smiling

@ediblelandscapingsc I'll keep an eye out for Diospyros Texana seeds if you are interested. And scat. Hilarious! Like I said, there are some young plants growing but even tiny plants have very impressive tap roots, making them quite a challenge to dig up.
