HI ALL... new to the forum...what a great resource... well.. I am retiring and have a background in botany and genetics and have a home sitting on a couple acres with a little creek in western MI so thought raising/hybridizing daylilies might be an awesome hobby :)
I do have a question on LA seed sellers. I was wondering, how concerned should I be about bogus seed crosses? The reason I ask is I have recently purchased from several sellers.... and well.. i noticed on some very expensive crosses with new hybrids (over $$$ for for 5 seeds).. that a particular seller sells only seeds.... no plants.. no seedlings... and it got me thinking... if they have all this expensive brand new stock and have been in business for many years is it realistic that they sell nothing else? so, I am seriously concerned that I may have paid for gold and will be receiving lead... LOL... the thought of babying random seedlings for two years to learn they were actually home depot mutts is giving me, umm, pause...
It is a muddle because feedback is given for plump seeds or extra seeds... but, while one expects a cross to result (on average) in something between the two parents +/- within reason.... by the time you see a result it is far too late for feedback and without a DNA analysis of the purported parents and the offspring proving a fictitious or sloppy cross would be impossible.
Anyway... not making any accusations at all.... just got to thinking and was wondering if any of the long-timers on LA have any advice for me moving forward (of course making my own crosses would solve the dilemma... but starting out I thought getting some quality seeds and learning from those seemed like a good idea).
Thx for any advice
Jeff
