Ginger: Do you have any photo's of the bark? It reminds me somewhat of Celtis laevigata ("Sugarberry"): Sugarberry (Celtis laevigata)

hmm ... well, it's not Celtis laevigata. It sure looks familiar though and I think you may be on the right track with Prunus. I thought of Prunus serotina (Wild Black Cherry), the bark looks similar but not the leaves. Wild Black Cherry (Prunus serotina)

The P. serotina in my yard has wavy leaf edges:

What a headache this one is! Rolling my eyes. Hilarious!

I have a feeling this is a Prunus, after looking at many I agree with Dave. The red zig zag leaf stem, alternate leaves, bark and fruit seem to fit Carolina Laurelcherry, Prunus caroliniana which is listed for the area (Rosaceae).
