Hi all,

Help a newbie out and share what your favorite lilies are and why. There is no minimum or maximum number you need to come up with, but let's try to come up with some lists (photos are good, too!).

I am new to growing lilies, but I have admired Lilium regale in many gardens so far. It is what inspired me to start searching for lilies bulbs this fall and sparked the resulting lily obsession I am now experiencing.

So, c'mon and share your favorites! :-)

Cheers,
Corey

If you like L. regale you will probably like hybrid trumpet lilies. They are mostly sold as strains such as Golden Splendor, Moonlight, Golden Sceptre and Copper King for the warm color spectrum and Pink Perfection, Summer Palace and Midnight strains for the cooler end. Trumpets are usually out to downfacing and fragrant. There are newer upfacing ones but I don't care that much for them.

A couple of clones are Tropical Isle (B&D) and Copper Crown (LG).

I like the trumpets and the downfacing asiatics.

My favorite, I guess, of all, is the Queen series from BuggyCrazy (Lisa). I hate to tease you with ones you can't get, but Queen Of Hearts is just such a beauty.

Miss Feya was new to me last year and I loved it

Other favorites are Quintessence, Scheherazade, Silk Road, of course, Ariadne, Midsummer's Eve. I sound like an ad for TLG. LOL.

Pardalinum, those trumpet hybrids are gorgeous! I love the subtle colors and graceful forms of the trumpets. It seems like they would always have a refined air about them no matter what color or size they were.

Polly, I love all of the photos I see of Buggy's Queen series. It seems like a "perfect" oriental strain if such a thing exists. The balance of colors and bloom form are absolutely superb. Too bad there are no longer any sources for it (sigh).

'Miss Freya' also looks wonderful. Is it an oriental or an OT? B&D claims that it is the same lily as 'LaVern Friemann'. Where did you find it?

As for your other favorites...well...I have planted all of them, LOL! Believe it or not, Judith sent me a single bulb of 'Midsummer's Eve' as a surprise bonus with the last order I placed with her. I couldn't believe it myself when I saw it. I planted it in a prominent spot with excellent soil so I hope it does well and multiplies quickly for me. There is nothing wrong with sounding like an ad for TLG. They truly deserve their wonderful reputation!

One more question. Have you found 'Quintessence' to be a vigorous grower? I ask because a couple of people on DG have had bad luck with Luminaries being weak, a stingy bloomer and not returning well. This concerned me since 'Quintessence' is a clonal selection from the Luminaries strain. Any thoughts on this?

I would call Quintessence an average grower.

I bought Miss Feya at Brent and Beckys. B and B calls it an OT. I don't have Laverne Friemann so I can't compare.

Sounds like we think alike as far as lilies are concerned!

I've been struggling for years in an attempt to ascertain my favorite lilies. If Polly sounds like an ad for B & G, I'd sound like one for Buggy Crazy My top 8 came from her:

I like all lilies.OT's,Trumpets,Asiatics. They are easy to fit into any garden because they grow taller than the surrounding perens. I have them in part shade hosta beds.
I will post a album here ,not in order of prefrence.

Note in some photos ,how they are planted wherever they will fit.

Now, Jack, I would have sounded like an ad for Lisa, but I didn't want to tease poor Corey, LOL. Those are just beautiful!

Glad you weighed in Jo. Jo's gardens are fabulous. Although she could use more lilies. Ha.

Please feel free to post as many photos of Buggy lilies as you wish. Even though I may never have the chance to grow any, I can still drool over the photos. Pictures of the Queen series, Awesome, July Snow and Mint Fizz are always incredible. I have not seen any in person, but those four are my favorite so far.

Jo, your garden and lilies are all beautiful. I really enjoyed the pictures of L. regale and 'Elise'. I might have to add 'Elise' to my wish ist for next year. I love the downfacing sunburst flowers and the tall, willowy stems.

Anthony, I have been looking at the entries for Lilium under the Plants tab. You are correct, I should be focusing on other things right now, but I find myself reading about lilies almost every spare minute of the day Smiling

I'm afraid that any lily blooming is my favorite. But I too am a huge fan of Buggy's Queen oriental lilies. I have actually done a little bit of hybridizing with them, so time will tell.

My favorite lily I'd say, if that is even possible, is a lily called 'Pink Jazz' and is my latest avatar picture.

Welcome to lilyland Corey. Good to have you here!

Tracey, where did you get 'Pink Jazz'? It is stunning. I just e-mailed B&D to inquire about availability and they responded within minutes saying that they might have some bulbs available Fall 2012 if next summer is long and warm, but if it is cold again like this past summer it will not be until Fall 2013. The part of their fields in which they were propagating scales was flooded this spring and they ended up losing a lot of their scales.
