I saw this hydrangea at a nursery. The tag mentioned Star or Starry but I haven't been able to ID it. OK you plant detectives......what is it?

Check out Shooting Star. I saw one a few years ago called that and went nuts over it.

They look so much alike! I wonder if they are the same plant. It's sold here at the hob nobs nursery..

Good guess...the last picture of the Swan looks like it. The petals were quite long.....in some of the pictures they appear rounder.

Yes Paul, but there's also Hydrangea paniculata Great Star and I have a feeling they are the same plant! Sometimes a plant is sold under a different name to avoid paying plant royalties, but that might not be the case here.

Another with even longer petals, they seem to vary!

Bingo! 'Great Star' certainly looks like the correct one. I also remember the tag indicating it was an intro from somewhere in Europe and having Star in the name. Thanks.

Interesting! On the RHS there is Hydrangea macrophylla Great Star = 'Blanc Bleu', which is not a paniculata and looks nothing like it..

http://apps.rhs.org.uk/horticu...

But it has the same "princesse Sturdza" origins..

http://www.promessedefleurs.co...

http://www.esveld.nl/htmldia/h...

I didn't get any results for The Swan..

http://apps.rhs.org.uk/rhsplan...

I'm as confused as anyone! The RHS search only lists plants which are sold by nurseries here and are listed on their site, but if Heronswood is selling it as The Swan maybe that's the correct name?

Zuzu, I'm getting as old as treasure. Hilarious!

I have one called 'Great Star' that looks just like it. It came from the garden of a princess in France. Seriously.
