Thanks for that Shirlee. Smiling I have a couple more of that grasshopper coming up. They are cuties but they eat the coleus sensless and for some reason like sitting on daylily flowers.

Our zone has changed too. We were a 5b and now we are a 6a.

The long-horned grasshoppers here eat the pollen. I'm not sure if they might rarely eat just the surface layer of the flower.

Glen, we had katydids (they look similar to your grasshopper) here late summer
last year. The first I've seen in abundance in years. They ate the daylily blossoms.
Big old bites out of the blossom and the buds.

Maurice, I hadn't thought of that. It would explain why they like sitting in the flowers.

bearsearch said:I was rooting around in old posts today and came across this thread on white / near white daylilies. These are all good photos of some very nice daylilies but it seems to me that none of them are actually white. With the exception of Joan Senior, I don't believe I have ever seen a "white" daylily and the J.S. I saw wasn't all that white. Excluding the throats of the flowers are there any truly white daylilies? I bought a Heavenly White Lightning last year which has not bloomed for me yet and based on the photos in this thread and the data base I think I might be rather disappointed. I'm not a real fan of white flowers but I thought it would be good to have at least one and I'm not sure I made a good choice though the size, shape, bud count and dormancy all suit my desires. Any recommendations for a better white northern hardy daylily?

There may be others, but Sagarmatha is very white. This is the first year it has bloomed for me and I held it up to all my near whites and it is much whiter than any others.

EdBurton said:Hi all
Penny Kelly when it blooms is very white indeed, the eye and edge make the whiteness even more dramatic, problem for me is that I think it would do better in a warmer climate than my Zone 5a.

Speaking of zones, when I was in my late 20's my area NE Wisconsin was considered zone 3, when I hit my 40's we moved into zone 4a, then in my 50's we went to zone 4b, now into my 60's we went to zone 5a.
I always wondered if I would move to a warmer climate when I retired, looks like the way things are going I might just as well stay here and let the climate move to me.

(I am waiting for global warming to turn the Mississippi River into the gulf of Mexico!)
I looked up Penny Kelly in the database and it is listed as a zone 3 dormant.

Yes, with climate change all these people with dormants are going to be caught out.

I agree Betty. I just got it this spring and it only produced a couple of blooms but my gosh it is already increasing fans. I think I have at least 2 to 3 more fans than I had in the spring when I planted it.

I got mine from Fred last year but it took its time to decide to bloom for me -- but I sure wasn't disappointed when those scapes started coming up! It has such personality -- I just love it!

LVT was new here this year, but it did great. Two fans, two scapes and two more instant rebloom scapes. Lots of blooms. I hope the scapes get taller next year. I liked it a lot.

How do the "Lillians" do in cooler zones, 4B for example? kind of funny, but at first, I thought "Lillian" was your wife and you were naming your DLs for her!

Someone's reading my mind. I just KNEW there was bound to be a 'Favorite Whites' forum somewhere, but I couldn't find it; and here it is. Thank You! I just bought 'Lillian's Thin Ice' on the LA (from tink3472), and hope it survives and grows in my zone 4 garden. Here are a couple of pale yellow/cream sdlgs. that bloomed for the first time this year in zone 3. (I and a friend have a "test garden" at the Brainerd MN Arboretum.)

When a first year daylily meets or exceeds all expectations, I think it deserves to be seen again, especially when it began blooming May 29. stopped a couple of weeks ago, but put up two more scapes that just began blooming this morning. This picture was taken this morning at 9:00 a.m. in full sun, and it speaks for itself as to the quality of the blooms. Royal Frosting is a wonder to us, and we hope it will always perform this way. I had doubts because it is an dormant Apps hybrid and I thought it wouldn't do well here. Of course, we had a very cold winter, so maybe that's the reason, so we will have to wait and see what the future holds, but so far, we are absolutely loving this daylily.
