Garden Tours: Valleylynn, Lynn Smith

By Sharon
November 12, 2011

Let's take a trip this week to Oregon and visit the lovely gardens created by Lynn Smith and her husband, Cliff. It's always fun to step out of our own climate to see what grows well in another, and sometimes it's even more fun to see what our climates have in common. You are going to love what you see!

Lynn, I'm simply amazed at all the different plants, shrubs and trees you have. It wouldn't be too difficult for weeds to get out of hand - that's a lot of gardening to keep up with. Love your bridge and arbors, and all your sweet little dogs too. Lovey dubby And your sempervivum collection makes me drool every time I see your gorgeous, colorful beds. Thanks for sharing your beautiful gardens with us.

Thank you Chris. I didn't realize I had so much variety until I started going through the last few years of photos. I have so much more, but had to just stop downloading photos.
Over the 11 years we've been here I've had so much fun trying new things. Some worked and some haven't.
One that I am really excited about is some beautiful Amaryllis bulbs sent to me by Obliqua. I planted them in different areas to see if I could grow them outside in the ground. It looks like two of them have made the transition. They haven't bloomed outdoors yet, I'm hoping this coming year their amazing flowers will appear.

Lynn, I'm on my third trip back to your garden! I tried to decide my favorite and I think it's the snowball viburnum, but I'll probably change my mind on my fourth visit! Beautiful.

Rolling on the floor laughing
Sandi what a wonderful way to get your exercise for the day. The Snowball Viburnum is one of my favorites. When the blooms first start out they have a pale green color and aren't that interesting, but with time they mature into large fluffy looking white balls. And they last for a long time. Then fall comes, what beautiful fall color. The shape of the leaves almost look like maple leaves. What is not to love about this shrub?

It's probably not to late in your area to get one this month and get it into the ground. Might even get a few blooms on it come next spring. Thumbs up

Now would be a good time to get them going. When does your winter season begin?

Might be enough time to get in in the ground with some mulch to keep it from freezing and thawing and heaving it out of the ground.

What a wonderful idea Sandi. It sure doesn't take much to keep some of the succulents happy. Love that. Thumbs up

What a wonderful variety of plants you grow, Lynn, and everything looks so neat and tidy. The Rhododendron is particularly spectacular!

Lynn, your gardens are so beautiful! I think my favorite is the grape vine room... I am trying to do something similar to cover our pergola... yours is an inspiration! Everything is beautiful, the gate your husband built is lovely, do you have a closer picture of the gate itself? My son used to live in Ashland, and it is gorgeous there. I'm learning a little more about Oregon from you! Thank you for sharing!

Someone sent it to me, so it's not my idea. I sure think I'll copy it tho. (Need to get that copyright off the pic that's not mine!).

Zuzu, this year it was not so neat and tidy. But it is on it's way to being that again.

Here you go Brenda. I notice I didn't get a photo of the gate latch. I will try to do that later today. I love what we came up with for the latch. This gate saved the life of our Nikki when a vicious dog from a neighboring farm got through the far back fence (actually chewed a hug hole in the heavy wire fence). It couldn't jump over the top of the gate so was trying to get to her through the heavy steel mesh.

Sandi, go back to that post and delete that photo, disable your watermark and add the photo back to the post. Thumbs up Your should also give credit to whoever it belongs to (person, site).

It will be fun to see how many of us try that idea. Thumbs up
