A favorite book in Early American Gardeners of the Thirteen Colonies

Early gardening and farming was nearly a full time daily job for the initial settlers of the thirteen colonies. The climate and soil were new to them and it took quite some time to discover what fruits, vegetables and crops would grow successfully here.

One of my favorite books on gardening is Bernard M'Mahon's American Gardener. M'Mahon was Thomas Jefferson's mentor, so the book may be a little later than the 13 colonies. M'Mahon was the curator of plant materials recovered on the Lewis & Clarke expedition. And where else can you find explicit instructions on how to build a hot bed from fresh horse manure?
