I have an Inca Sun, and this spring I received a start of Inca Gold. Both were from Logee's. The blooms look so much alike. Possibly the gold is a little darker. Are these actually different cultivars?

Sandi,

Logee's doesn't have either one for sale any more. 'Inca Sun' is listed on iBrug's name list, but Inca Gold is not. I thought maybe BGI might have 'Inca Gold' listed, but I've had trouble getting the site to come up in the recent past. Today is one of those days. I wanted to see if BGI listed it to get the parentage, but no luck.

I did a search for photos of both. The one photo I found for Inca Gold is identical or almost identical to the photo of Inca Sun that Logee's used on their website. Take a look at the plants surrounding the Brug in both photos. They are identical. So is the Brug. I think the Brug is the same one — 'Inca Sun'. Sorry about the size of 'Inca Sun's photo, but I think you can still see that the photos are the same.
This is supposed to be 'Inca Gold'

This is Logee's photo of 'Inca Sun'

I'll try later to get onto BGI's website to see if they list 'Inca Gold'

Thank you, but that's okay, I believe they are both the same. Appreciate the response. Puzzling why they have different names.

http://www.brugmansia.us/forum... This should get you into the gallery.

I found Inca Sun, but not Inca Gold. I also found Sun Goddess, which I received as a small cutting 3 yrs ago. No fertilizer, intense sun, very little water, and it still managed to bloom for the first time. I think I'll take better care of it now.

Sometimes a company will change the advertised name to avoid legal issues over a plants ownership.I have heard that Inca Sun was a patented plant.I'm not sure if that is true or not but that could be one reason for the change.

Yes, I wondered about that, but hesitated to bring it up. I know that there are different names for identical alocasias depending on which nursery you buy from. The two Incas both have a compact shape and blooms seem identical. I guess I've leave the tags as they are for the time being, but I do think they're both Inca Sun.
Thanks, JT

I thought Snowbank was the only patented Brug at least it is the only one that carries the "PPAF" (Plant Patent Applied For) designation after the cultivar name. Kyle Courtney is Inca Sun's hybridizer and I presume the person who registered it. I remember that he posted photos of it in Dave's Garden ages ago. Only later did I see it for sale through Logee's. If Logee's changed the name of its Inca Sun, it would probably be in even more trouble for hijacking the plant.

Sandi, did you ever see it for sale by Logee's or did you get the Inca Gold cuttings from some one else? I have not been able to find much about it. I have a feeling that some one mislabeled it.

Yes,I have been busy getting Country Garden changed over to the new owner. The first deal fell through and I had to start over with a new buyer. Some folks have big ideas but no money and no credit. That can waste a lot of time.I hope to have everything done by the end of the month.

Doris I will still sell a few in the BGI classifieds. Those are open to members and non members.I do not plan to grow in quantity anymore but will offer the odd rooted cutting from time to time.
