Well, I can't bear to disturb the lovely scenes of summer tranquility in the other thread so I figured I would start one for the benefit of those who don't water garden in colder states.

Here is the trek out to my pond in the back yard.

It really is. Soft and quiet, assuming you get up at 5am before traffic starts up on the other side of my fence. But it gets pretty old by the end of March.

I can imagine - especially if it starts in October!

I know by early March, I should be listening for the robins...

Wow! I've never lived where it snowed, that's incredible. I guess you have to memorize where everything is so you don't step in the wrong place? It's amazing to me that anything lives under that.

I would like zone 11 myself. I like the heat and I am one of the rare ones that likes humidity. I believe your heat is a dry heat though, is it not? When I was in Mexico, the heat seemed dryer to me.

I do have to mark certain things, so I don't pull them up the following spring when getting my gardens ready. I can recognize a number of the newer leaves that come up, but definitely not all of them.

I know that Mary is under 2 feet of snow - we have not shut down our pond yet - typically that is between Thanksgiving and the first week of December. I do think it will be later this year. I did start journalling all of this back in 2006, however we have been ponding since 2001.

I love heat too, and even humidity. I'm originally from Calif which is dry but moved here 5 years ago and it is very humid here. Mexico is a huge country and many parts of it are dry but mostly the coastal areas are humid (outside of the Bajas and northwestern desert coastline). There are many people, including Mexicans, that will tell you that Merida is unbearably hot and humid but I've found it to be less humid, and often less hot, than Houston or New Orleans. We are about 20 miles inland from the Gulf and get afternoon breezes without the steady driving winds. I adjusted pretty easily, don't even use AC, but keep the fans running in the summer. It helps that I live in a very old house with really high stone walls and ceilings. It stays cool inside even when it is a scorcher outside. My pond temps get up into the 90's in the summer and rarely drop below 80ºf anytime. I mostly have Mollies and Guppies in the ponds and the heat doesn't seem to bother them. I also have some Angel fish to keep the population of smaller fish under control, they too have adjusted to the high water temps and the high PH. I'd love to have some Discus in the ponds but they are said not to tolerate high PH very well so I've resisted.

I am not a fan of a/c myself. I prefer to have a fan just to move the air as well. Usually with A/C I end up freezing.

I had thought that in my greenhouse, I would put a smallish pond into the greenhouse and I would like to keep tropical fish in there as well. I have always loved Angel fish. Do you have any pictures?

Yes, I'll start a new thread so it doesn't hijack this one.
