Well, the season has officially started a whole month early here in North Carolina! I will been posting iris as they bloom, and will be joined by Gabe as his bloom. Hopefully some of the other Carolina (North and South) iris growers will post some too. It will be nice to have a full record of what blooms here in the southeast.

On February 26th I found Killarney Green bursting onto the scene.



And due to the very sultry 70's we had it opened in a hurry.

Last year my first iris opened on March 26th, a whole month later. And that first one couldn't wait this year either!

Little Stitches

This iris was both my first and last iris to bloom last year and it really zapped it's own energy so I am really surprised to see this one single bloom right now.

Please excuse the very nearly dead rhizome behind it. That is where I lost Plot Line, Smart Money and Rare Find.

Great to see you have irises booming. I have an inch and a half of new snow this morning that wasn't predicted! Plot line rots off every year here, but is still alive. It did have one short stem bloom last year so I got to see it at least. Smart Money does OK here, and I might have one to share if it makes this crazy winter.

I need to redo that section of the garden. It needs a trench for better water runoff. I left the rhizomes that were hard but leafless just in case they wanted to grow. They just didn't take the hint.

Blooms!!!

Little Stitches opened up right before a big thunderstorm and then a night of freeze. Held up great to the heavy rain but curled up in the frost.

Here it is in happy times.

Note that this is a early season bloom and the beard is purple tipped white.
Later blooms last year changed to the rust brown tipping like you see in the throat of this picture.

And just in case you night marauders get any ideas about the iris I will be posting I need to warn you.....
