Just adding here more recent photos of my amaryllis in water gel bead & hydroton rock set-up: Photo taken on 14Mar2012

I really like this set-up. What plants do well living like this and how do you find the materials?

So far the plants of mine that thrives in this set up are the golden pothos and the dracaena sanderiana (see upper photos on this thread) I am also presently experimenting how far along the Paperwhite Ziva bulbs and Amaryllis bulbs will go in this set-up. I have to see if it will rebloom first. So far forcing the bulbs in this set-up works, now they are on their leaf growing stage. Will update as I go along

I got my gel beads before at a local japanese store here in the Bay area, Cali...most recently I also found the gel beads available at Michael's craft store. The hydroton rocks I got from a local store called Orchard Supply Hardware, or you can get it on their online store. Hydroton is also known as leca stones..light expanded clay aggregates, your local hardware may have them too. Other brand names for leca stones are aliflor and primeagra.

This is the current photo of my Paperwhite Ziva bulb, it has finished the force blooming stage so it is now in the leafy growth stage. I just added more gel beads, got a lot of excess from another project



I was initially testing 4 bulbs. Of the 4, only this one went ahead to make its forced bloom, the 3 others are taking their sweet time even up to now. So I guess it all depends as well how good a bulb you got. Or could be temperature issues, who knows..this winter is quite unusual as it is.

So will just see how far along this one will go...

I appreciate this information. I may at least try this for the pathos type of plants. I wonder if this kind of set uo will keep a banana plant(s) happy?
