Paul2032 ~ there is a Sansevieria Jade but it is solid green. http://stokestropicals.plants.... No doubt the tags got switched.

On these variegated Sans I wondered if exposure to light caused more or less variegation as well as color but it sounds like I'm wrong again!

Sheryl ~ I will gladly share a piece of that Sans with you ~ will drop you a note.

Stush ~ thanks for the ID assistance. I must admit I am still confused. But not your fault ~ thanks. Kristi

Both of the mother-in-law tongue were given to me. So far they seem to be doing well.

I have a plant which is not doing well. I know not what it is, or how to fix it's problem. My issue is that i don't think my sense of touch is as good as it used to be so maybe it is getting too much or too little

Thumb of 2012-02-10/dogpack/03bf68
water. How do you know the difference in plants getting too much or too little water?

It looks like a Kalanchoe blossfeldiana. That one should be super easy to grow. I would cut it back to about 4 inches and let it resprout. Maybe repot too, just in case you have some root rot.
The rule on all succulents is: when in doubt, DON'T water.

I think your plant is a Kalanchoe. They generally do not like a lot of water, and prefer it on the dryer side from my experience. I let mine dry out completely before I re-water it. And yes on what Hetty said.

Thank you very much for the information. I will work on this asap.

I found some interesting information about the dreceana which I will post in the what about dreceanas column.
Just in case it helps here also here is the information:

Fusarium leaf spot on Sansevieria
Pathogen - Fusarium moniliforme
Symptoms - Spots start as tiny water-soaked areas on immature leaves which rapidly enlarge into elliptical-to-irregular-shaped areas with a red or tan coloration. They are often surrounded by a bright yellow margin which can be 1/8-inch wide. As spots merge, immature leaves become distorted. Under optimal conditions, meristems of infected shoots die.
Control - Standing water in the central whorl of the plant is necessary for infection to occur. The high levels of water available during the rooting process are optimal for disease initiation and progress in cuttings. Complete disease control can be achieved if plant foliage is kept dry. Dracaenas are also susceptible to this pathogen. Chlorothalonil (Daconil 2787) has been especially effective in controlling Fusarium leaf spot experimentally. Check labels for legal plants, intervals, and rates.

Paul,
Your sans is a Jade. It is called Sansevieria Trifasciata 'Jade Dwarf Marginated'. I have posted a picture above on this posting. The Sans. Tri~ 'Jade' is the same with out the yellow edges.

DogPack,
Your Kalanchoe needs to be in a cactus soil mixed with pumice to increase water drainage. They require very little water and a soil without peat. No water retaining what so ever. I learned this the hard way myself. We call it Al's Gritty Mix. From another garden web posting. Also thanks for all the info above.

Hetty,
I feel I still owe you. What Sans. are you interested in.

Alan,
Good to be back. Hurray!

Like the others I think it's a water problem. But not so much of quantity but drainage. I have a Kalanchoe (well actually a lot, they're not called "Mother of Millions" for nothing) which is out in our wet season rains for months on end getting a real lot of water. But it's in a very sandy mix and water drains straight out. Dry season it's hot and dry for months and it doesn't seem to mind.

Don't forget lots of bright light for the Kalanchoe ... once you've got it going again, you might want to try to get it to bloom, too:

Dogpack,
Your plant looks like it has powdery mildew. I agree about changing the soil and cutting it back for a second chance. Also, put it in a clay pot instead of a plastic pot, don't let it sit in water and make sure it is getting air circulation and bright light. When the soil dries out, give it a good drink and empty the drainage dish after a couple of hours. I have kalanchoes doing well in regular Miracle-gro soil but I amended it with perlite and vermiculite somewhere like one third to a half in volume. I'm not saying not to use cactus soil. It is a good option.
Once the weather gets warmer, bring it outside in a shady spot. Do not expose it to direct sun until after a couple of weeks. If it makes it that long, it should recover completely outside.
Or just get a new one because they are pretty cheap.

I think it was $7 shipping, but that is for express, 3 day delivery, so I didn't mind Smiling By the way, they actually had this plant at a nursery I went to this weekend, but they wanted $14.95, plus tax, so I think I still came out ahead Smiling

Alan and Tarev,
Great news. I need some good news to chear me up, and thanks.
Alan, Keep your eyes open at local grocery stores, big box stores, Wal-Marts, and K-Marts. They seem to always have some on clearance sales or even full price of only $5 or so. I saw some full size Sans. Trifasciata Laurentii about 24 inches high and a pot full for only $12. I can't ship them to anyone less than that. And it was beautiful. Wish I didn't have one so I could buy it again. It looked nicer than my plant. Angry Drooling
Tarev, Doesn't it really pick you up to see new life growing and know you did it. Hurray!
