LOL. Vic, I understand that food police thing. Been there, done that. Hilarious! I probably drove everyone nuts. Pollan is good, IMHO. When was his first book written? I know it has been awhile now. I no longer have my copy.

You are fortunate to have a good health food store. The ones here are mostly vitamins and gadgets and dried things and so forth. I'm glad for that but I got spoiled out West. Glare Our Kroger does have a small organic produce section but the prices are sky high. I buy some things there. They have a couple of short aisles of other organic foods, dried, boxed, bottled, frozen, and so forth. I'm glad for that but I wonder if anyone buys it except on sale days? It's one thing to have an organic section and another thing to have an affordable organic section. Shrug!

I was just reading some government abstracts (US, Canada, Croatia) about alfalfa seeds and found out they can be stored for 4-8 years in cool conditions. In fact, they have such a high hard seed content to begin with that the germination rate is not good until they have been stored for at least a couple of years. During that time the hard alfalfa seeds soften and become easier to germinate. 4-8 years! Outstanding long-term storage. That makes them an even better choice for those who are wanting to have emergency food supplies on hand. And that isn't just "survivalists" ... it's anyone who is interested in preparing for an emergency.

OK, I'll be quiet now. Big Grin

It's also a subject near & dear to my heart. And another one I'm rabid about is dog food, which sort of goes hand in hand with what we're talking about.

Thanks for reminding me that seeds sprout in the dark, Tee. I shoulda figured that one out; yep, it's dark under the dirt where they normally sprout. Hilarious!

LOL, Renee, I do that all the time. Just wanted you to save your money on the light source. Big Grin

Thumbs up on the organic dog food, Vic. As for cats, they need greens in their diet and can safely eat many of the sprouted grasses (including wheatgrass, oh dear). Alfalfa is one of them.

Do dogs need a lot of greens?

Dogs can have veggies including greens & also fruits. The veggies can be raw per se but for their bodies to extract the vitamins the veggies need to have been frozen which breaks down the cellulose making it possible for them to utilize the vitamins. You do have to cook hard things like sweet potato or winter squash etc.....

I actually feel healthier just reading the article! LOL!

Maybe someday I'll get around to it. I think I tried it when I first got married. I have a vague memory of alfalfa. I drank alfalfa leaf tea too. That I do remember!
