I noticed when "copying" a German name into the cultivar field the search engine does not translate.
i.e. A search for (Astilbe x crispa 'Däumling') using the words "astilbe daumling" yields no results.

The letter a is different from the letter ä. I don't yet know how to tell the search system to do this kind of fuzzy searching, it'll have to be something for my todo.

In the mean time, could the sytem tools character map be used?

Start menu - all programmes - accesssories - system tools - character map.

All you do then is click on the character you want, select, then click 'copy' and you can then paste it here using a right click.

Another option might be to add a cultivar, i.e. A. x crispa Däumling, added cultivar Daumling.

We have had to do that for the roses and daylilies, just change the one character so that it works with the search.

Did you leave the original and add a cv. or just change it?

In the daylily database, I just changed it for now. This was before that extra cultivar field was added. The roses I believe have both.
