Killing Slugs and Snails

By LabourofLove

COFFEE KILLS SLUGS & SNAILS. Make very strong caffeinated coffee, then mix it half and half with water and put into a trigger or compressed-air sprayer. Spray on plants and the ground that snails & slugs travel on. As they move over the treated areas, they take up the caffeine through their pseudopod (foot) and it gives them heart attacks in 72 hours. Cheap coffee works as well as the more expensive sort. I use espresso because it's more finely ground (works better in my machine). I also run the water through the grounds more than once to extract as much as possible. Cheers to the University of Hawaii for discovering an elegant and simple solution to nasty critters.

That's pretty cool!
I've seen just one snail in Phoenix AZ in 18 years. I've seen several slugs. I have them in my yard but they don't seem to eat plants. Confused

When I lived in Los Altos Hills CA my neighbor had ducks. She'd let them out of their cages into the yard. They'd make their way through a hole in the fence to my yard. Did wonders keeping the snail population down. Seemed to LOVE snails! Lovey dubby

Escargot, of course!

Okay, if someone can pry the coffee from my clutches, we'll give it a try on my hosta next year. Thanks, Labour of Love!

Oh thank you for this tip! I have slugs that have eaten most of the plants in one bed in my garden, they leave their slime trails all over and I've gone out at night and caught a few but... ugh! I'm afraid to use bait because of my cats so this is wonderful. I'm making some super strong coffee tonight and going out to spray.

I like the fact that it isn't poison too. I don't like having snail bait around the dog. And I can't get them all with salt so this is a really nice way to go.

I don't feel one bit sorry for them. Where we lived there were so many of them & the snails that you walked down the driveway to the tune of crunch, crunch, Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!! And it would get so bad when you went outside it smelled like fish! IIIIIIIIICCCCCCCCCCCKKK!

I know they don't need a mate. They do it to themselves! They have both sex organs. How can you deal with that kind of population explosion? OH! I KNOW! Now! Kill them with caffeine! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

So glad to hear this, The garden is a mess this year. Had a few other years, but they are out in full force. It's amazing how they will eat one plant to silliness and leave the next one alone.

Thanks again,

Hap

Don't forget to also spread the used coffee grinds around the plants. I did that this past summer it seems to help.

Coffee grounds work great, you can just sprinkle them around plants you want to protect. But the caffeine dissapates quite rapidly so you need to reapply. I had not heard of this tip, I do know that you can splash your left over coffee around the plants and it will kill the slugs, but never actually followed it to the next step, to actually make coffee on purpose and spray it. Thanks!!!

Had a friend end up in ICU from drinking too much coffee (he was law enforcement and thought nothing of downing pot after pot, almost like it was part of his job description!) If it hurts human hearts, I can see where it wouldn't do no snails and no slugs no good a'tall! Hilarious!
If you don't ask, the answer is always 'no.'
